Noncitizens are slowly gaining voting rights
Two Vermont cities have joined the short but growing list of jurisdictions that allow residents who are not U.S. citizens to vote in local elections.
Two Vermont cities have joined the short but growing list of jurisdictions that allow residents who are not U.S. citizens to vote in local elections.
The purpose of the vote was to override Governor Scott’s veto of H.227, which amended the charter of the City of Winooski to allow non-citizens who are legally in the United States and full-time residents of the city to vote in city elections.
“All that’s left to conclude is that some legislators (and the governor) feel the need to lord this one over local communities just because it makes them feel squirmy. And, honestly I get it. Change can do that to you.”
As much as Republicans support the concept of local control, we cannot allow local municipalities to violate the constitution. We take our oaths of office seriously.
“President Biden’s open-border policies have led to a humanitarian crisis at our southern border as record levels of illegal immigrants, drugs, and contraband pour into Texas,” Abbott said in a statement.
The voters of Montpelier invited these immigrants to enjoy full membership in their community, regardless of what stage they were at in the national citizenship process. The governor slammed the door shut on them. And indeed on all the voters in both Montpelier and Winooski.
Gov. Phil Scott has vetoed two bills that would have let noncitizen residents of Montpelier and Winooski vote in local elections. However, he signed H.430, which will create a program similar to Dr. Dynasaur so undocumented immigrant children and pregnant woman can obtain health insurance coverage.
Civic engagement and voter participation is good — but it should be preceded by citizenship. The Senate’s decision sets up a slippery slope — should non-citizens be allowed to vote for state legislative positions? For governor? For Congress? For president?
Illegal aliens don’t have a right to be in the country, let alone have representation in Congress. Aliens who are here legally also have no right to representation in Congress and are barred by federal and state laws from voting. Including them, particularly illegal aliens, in apportionment is fundamentally unfair to citizens.
This bill will provide health care for illegal aliens who are attracted to Vermont by these buttery public offerings. But let us analyze this silly bill, employing the critical thought that is so visibly absent from our so-called leadership.
Disparities will continue to increase the more Vermont welcomes impoverished BIPOC refugees and immigrants here. It is “inequitable” to slander Vermonters as racist for disparities which arise by virtue of welcoming poor black and Latino people.
Harris has faced criticism for delaying a visit to the southern border, as the overseer of the administration’s response to the migrant crisis by President Joe Biden. The New Hampshire Republican Party tweeted Friday that the country would be better served if she visited the southern border rather than campaign for Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan in the state.
