Australia considering ban on children’s books that use the words ‘boy’ and ‘girl’

School districts in Australia are seriously considering banning books for children that include the words “boy” and “girl” because they don’t want young children ascribing to gender stereotypes.

After the Australian National University came out with research that indicating that boys and girls are affected by gender stereotypes, Australia’s Manningham and Melbourne City Councils decided that purging literature of its biological nouns is the right move.

The university’s research posits that educators and parents should “minimise the extent to which gender is labelled.” If the councils move forward with the ban, the changes will apply not only to children’s books but also to materials used in schools and libraries.

The potential ban on biological nouns sparked concern among many parents who think the legislative forces within its education system have gone insane. “For goodness sake, this is social engineering gone crazy,” wrote parent Marie Hardwick on Facebook, according to News.com.au. “Leave kids alone to be kids,” she added.

“This needs to stop. Let’s just let kids be kids,” wrote parent Sarah Lovejoy on Sunrise News’ Facebook page.

Another parent wrote that taking away choice is always wrong, and that if the intention is to be inclusive then materials should be added rather than stripped from educational programs for children.

“When you’ve got kids, you suddenly realise that boys are boys and girls are girls and viva la difference. I don’t want to see androgyny out there,” Smooth FM’s Ron Wilson told Sunrise, News.com.au reports. “The fact (is) they are boys and girls and they are different and there’s no question about that. We should celebrate that. I think we need respect. We don’t need social engineering,” he added.
