Daily Chronicle: Biden, in Vermont, compares Trump to George Wallace, ’60s segregationist Biden once admired

By Guy Page

Friday and Saturday saw turbulent times on Twitter for Vermont Democratic leaders.

Friday, 2:14 pm: John Walters of Vermont Political Observer tweets Vermont Democratic Party leaders “need to quit whining and get their house in order” rather than complain about his fair and factual coverage of a senior staffer’s embezzlement of $19,000 of Party funds, and the aftermath. His column kicks butt and names names. (Walters is an equal-opportunity basher of state political parties, as readers of his columns about GOP state chair Deb Billado know.)

Friday, 2:21 pm: 2018 gubernatorial nominee Christine Hallquist posts on a photo of a truck promoting a casino and tweeted: “Seen driving around Burlington. With our current Climate Crisis it’s ridiculous to be wasting carbon on mobile billboards. Please pass a city ordinance against this.” In its retweet, Twitter handle News Done Right commented: “Today former #VTDEM Gov nominee @christine4world attacking #1stAmendment & commerce. Between her & Ehlers they don’t give a d–n about your individual freedom #Vermont.” A lively, humorous Twitter discussion ensued.

Saturday, 7:56 am: 2020 gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Holcombe tweets that Gov. Phil Scott “vetoed a bill that closed a background check loophole that let Dylan Roof kill 9 people in SC.”

Saturday, 8:34 pm: speaking at fundraising dinner in liberal, affluent, Dartmouth College bedroom community Norwich, presidential candidate Joe Biden compared Donald Trump to segregationist George Wallace, four-term Democratic governor of Alabama and three-time Democratic presidential candidate, tweets Burlington lawyer and politico Ed Adrian.

The event at the home of power couple Jane (former Finance Chair of Democratic National Committee) and Bill (inheritor of corporate zillions and former natural gas executive) Stetson was closed to the official media. Behold the beauty of Twitter: Adrian includes photos of the event, including former Gov. Peter Shumlin introducing Biden. Adrian also quotes Biden in his red-meat speech to high-rolling donors: “Trump is more George Wallace than George Washington….it’s bigger than any of us….we have to restore the soul of this country.”

It’s not the first time Biden has compared Trump to Wallace. After a similar statement in August, Real Clear Politics provides script and video of Trump’s August 7 response:

REPORTER: Mr. President, Joe Biden. Joe Biden says you have more in common with George Wallace than George Washington.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Well, you know, Joe is a pretty incompetent guy. I’ve watched his interviews. I’ve watched what he said and how he said it. And I wouldn’t have rated him very high in the first place, but Joe Biden has truly lost this fastball, that I can tell you. Thank you.

One wonders if Trump already knew that Biden was once an admirer of the man who declared in his 1963 inaugural speech, “I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” Biden praised Wallace over at least two decades. The Washington Examiner reported June 19 that “during his 1988 presidential campaign, Biden praised one of the most infamous segregationists in the United States, former Alabama Gov. George Wallace, and claimed that Wallace had given him an award in 1973 as one of the “outstanding young politicians in America.”

Biden also told the Philadelphia Enquirer in 1975 that “I think the Democratic Party could stand a liberal George Wallace — someone who’s not afraid to stand up and offend people, someone who wouldn’t pander but would say what the American people know in their gut is right.” (See Washington Examiner post for screen-shot of actual Enquirer column.)

  1. Shumlin and Biden? How’s that for peas in a pod? If good ole Uncle Joe is the Dems best hope, rots a ruck.

  2. The whole roster of folks on that side of the aisle, is so out of touch with reality it is almost indescribable. The hypocrisy, stupidity, and just plain insane talk makes one wonder if these people are really in pursuit of leading in government, or are they just up to an entertainment role???
I did not, 20-30 years ago, fathom the non-sense and scary stuff emanating from these people, would ever be so profoundly on display. These are the products of state universities who for the most part work off of tax dollars someone has worked two or more jobs to pay so they can produce these elitist , pinheads, now on display for everyone to see in their glory. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!

  3. Joe Biden is sinking quicker than the ” Titanic ” did, what a gaffer idiot !!

The DemoRATic party is in such turmoil with the over there current cast of characters leading
the pack for the ” DNC Nod ” and that includes Vermont’s very own Buffoon ” Socialist Sander’s ”
and his fairy tail free agenda…………….. people actually believe his BS.

The DNC in all their wisdom, well they are going to the Bench, pushing ” Bloomberg” to run !!

So let’s see a seventy-seven-year-old white Billionaire …… now that’s not going to sit well with
the crazy leftist half of the party …………..Oh well.

Good luck in 2020, you’re making it easier day bu day for Trump……Thanks !!
