Students shocked to hear Democrats’ past statements in favor of wall

By Neetu Chandak

Campus Reform asked American University students their thoughts on President Donald Trump’s statements on immigration and building the wall in midst of the partial government shutdown. The only catch was that the quotes were actually said by Democratic politicians.

Students were given the following quotes:

“We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, and unchecked,” former President Barack Obama said in 2005.

“I voted numerous times … to spend money to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in. And I do think you have to control your borders,” 2016 presidential nominee for the Democratic Party Hillary Clinton said in 2008.

“Illegal immigration is wrong, plain and simple. Until the American people are convinced we will stop future flows of illegal immigration, we will make no progress,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in 2009.

Many described the statements as “divisive,” “hateful,” and “dehumanizing.”

Reactions were different when finding out the statements were made by Democrats with some speechless and shocked.

“That’s a very good surprise, by the way,” one student said. “If this were a Trump quote, I believe it would be maybe a lot less calculated.”

“They [Obama, Clinton, Schumer] wouldn’t say that,” another student said. “Their demeanor, the way they come off is like, I don’t even know what to say.”

The government went into a partial shutdown on Dec. 22, 2018, after Democrats and Republicans could not reach an agreement on funding for Trump’s proposed wall at the U.S.-Mexico border to discourage illegal immigration.

  1. Some have suggested that President Trump selfishly shutdown the government over his pet project — the border wall.

    1) President Obama shut the government in 2013 specifically over his namesake pet project — “Obamacare” — after Congress declined to fully fund his Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

By comparison, Obama’s was a “complete” shutdown, whereas Trump’s is only a “partial” shutdown. In fact, Obama’s action was more damaging to workers than Trump’s. Obama furloughed far more government employees – more than 800,000 workers were furloughed without pay, while another 1.3 million were asked to work without pay. Compare that to just 380,000 furloughed workers and 420,000 exempt employees working without pay under Trump until the partial shutdown ends.

    2) Prior to Obama’s shutdown, it was another Democrat — President Clinton — who ordered a shutdown.

Clinton’s shutdowns in 1995 and 1996 were among the most notable in U.S. history.

During his government shutdowns, Clinton similarly furloughed 800,000 workers and asked others to work without pay, because he and Congress couldn’t agree on such topics as Medicare, environmental pet projects and other reforms to healthcare (stemming from his family’s pet project, “Hillarycare.”)

Democrats aren’t alone in the history of government shutdowns.

President Reagan ordered a whopping EIGHT government shutdowns stemming from disagreements over the fairness doctrine, welfare, foreign aid cuts, missile funding and more.

President George H.W. Bush also ordered a shutdown over spending, though it lasted through just one Columbus Day holiday weekend.

For liberals to suggest that Trump’s government shutdown is out of the norm is not only factually incorrect, it is pure hypocrisy given that all of the government shutdowns of the prior 20 years have been at the hands of Democratic presidents.

  2. Progressives have taken over all of the institutions and the government, who’s fault is that. Grandpa’s democratic party is dead. As dangerous as they could be, this new breed is hyper dangerous to freedom and individual rights. These students might as well be in a parrot cage because they only repeat what they are told. “If you’re not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you’re not a conservative at forty you have no brain.” Winston Churchill.

  3. Brainwashed minions ………. Pretty Sad state of affairs !!

As you can see from the last elections their coming, now that scares me. It’s bad enough
we’ve had to deal with Socialist Sanders, now we have a new generation of these Idiots ……..

Minions, I hope they all walk off the edge, sooner rather than later !!
