Republicans slam raid on Trump, blast left’s ‘abuse of power’

By Harold Hutchison

Congressional Republicans reacted with outrage on social media after the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence Monday.

“It is corrupt & an abuse of power,” Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas posted on Twitter. “What Nixon tried to do, Biden has now implemented: The Biden Admin has fully weaponized DOJ & FBI to target their political enemies. And with 87K new IRS agents, they’re coming for YOU too.”

“The @FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago is incredibly concerning, especially given the Biden admin’s history of going after parents & other political opponents,” Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida tweeted. “This is 3rd World country stuff. We need answers NOW. The FBI must explain what they were doing today & why.”

The raid has prompted some Trump allies to urge he announce a presidential run in 2024, Robert Costa of CBS reported on Twitter.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy warned Attorney General Merrick Garland to be ready to answer questions Monday night. Other House Republicans criticized the raid.

“The FBI’s raid on President Trump’s Florida home is a dark day in American history,” Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York said in a statement posted to Twitter. “The political weaponization of the FBI and Department of Justice is an actual threat to democracy. There is a reason that Americans no longer trust these agencies.”

“This is an absolutely incredible move by the DOJ to pursue, harass and now invade the former President’s home, who had authority to declassify documents,” Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas tweeted.

Gohmert went on to appeal for calm in the wake of the raid.

“To Republicans and Libertarians of good conscience: Do not let this lawless government provoke violence,” he said. “We have seen this before.”

“Trump is winning the FBI-raid caucus going away—we’ll learn more, but this is his best day in pursuit of the 2024 nomination in a long time,” Rich Lowry of National Review tweeted.

Cruz, Gohmert and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation. A spokesman for Stefanik pointed the DCNF to her statement, and Scott’s spokeswoman directed the DCNF to a Tuesday Fox Business appearance where Scott said the raid “should scare every American” and reiterated his call for the Biden administration to explain its actions.

  1. From the Epoch Times:

“… Eric Trump, a son of the former president, told the Daily Mail that a Trump attorney at Mar-a-Lago, Christina Bobb, asked FBI agents Monday about seeing a warrant.

‘They would not give her the search warrant,’ he told the outlet, referring to Bobb. ‘So they showed it to her from about 10 feet away. They would not give her a copy of the search warrant.’”

Apparently this warrant is under seal and legal movements are under way to remove the seal. I’m not sure what this means but apparently if Trump does have the warrant, he cannot disclose until the seal is lifted. But how would he have the warrant if the FBI refused to hand it over to his lawyer?

Now the Biden administration is claiming they knew nothing of this. That has to be a joke. DOJ and FBI raiding a former president and they don’t inform a sitting president? They must think we’re really dumb.

    • We are all a bit hair-trigger these days and it is generally best to allow time for actual information to get out before jumping to too many conclusions no matter strongly we feel about an issue or how sinister things may be portrayed.

Case in point: Christina Bobb, Trump’s lawyer who was present during the search, was given a search warrant as is standard practice. While the FBI does not release search warrants to the press, Trump has the ability to do so and this certainly would help clear things up as to the nature and reason of the search if he did so.
The affidavid with the supporting evidence for the search was sealed. This too is standard practice, as the proper place for evidence of this nature is in the courts not in the press.

What we do know from previous events is that Donald Trump when leaving the White House improperly took boxes of documents with him that were by law, government property. Over ten boxes of materials, some containing classified information have already been returned. Best guess , and Trump releasing his copy of the warrant would show if this was true of rnot, is that this search was based on credible evidence that more items belonging to the government were still illegally being kept at Trump’s private home.

If in fact material that is government property was found still there, this is just cause for the search. If in fact no material was found, there is a good case to be made that the Justice Department and FBI have indeed overstepped and are acting improperly. Time will tell.

        • Mr. Freitag’s sensibilities should be well-known by now. Why he thinks the way he does is of little import. None the less, we know well Freitag’s propensity for deceptive references.

“In mid-January 2022, NARA (National Archives and Records Administration) arranged for the transport from the Trump Mar-a-Lago property in Florida to the National Archives of 15 boxes that contained Presidential records, following discussions with President Trump’s representatives in 2021,” the National Archives said in a statement, confirming a report in the Washington Post.

          This occurred six months ago.

Never-Trumper, Freitag, obviously, could care less that Trump has been cooperating with the National Archive all along, while he ignores the fact that “National Archivist David Ferriero admits tens of thousands of [Obama’s] records have gone missing.”

We just have to keep an eye on Freitag’s deceptions and point them out to TNR readers when they occur. For example, we still don’t know what the Mar A Lago warrant says – and neither does Mr. Freitag.

          • It appears that the warrant for the raid was ordered ‘sealed’ by the DOJ. Mr. Freitag’s assertion that Trump could release it is yet another deception.

For one thing “They [the FBI] would not give her [Trump’s lawyer on the scene] the search warrant,” he told the outlet, referring to Bobb. “So they showed it to her from about 10 feet away. They would not give her a copy of the search warrant.”

So, if Trump does get the warrant, and chooses to release it before the DOJ lifts the seal-order, Trump will be breaking the law….

… which is what people like Freitag, apparently, want to see happen.

It’s called ‘entrapment’. Just like the FBI’s failed kidnapping sting of Michigan’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer.

Even Forest Gump knows: “Stupid is as stupid does”.

          • Trump says: “In early June, the DOJ and FBI asked my legal representatives to put an extra lock on the door leading to the place where boxes were stored in Mar-a-Lago – We agreed,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Aug. 10, in an apparent reference to boxes that may have been used to store presidential records in Mar-a-Lago. “They were shown the secured area, and the boxes themselves.”

“Then on Monday, without notification or warning, an army of agents broke into Mar-a-Lago, went to the same storage area, and ripped open the lock that they had asked to be installed.”

This is stuff third-world countries do.

Mr. Frietag is one of those hypnotized by the mainstream media. He apparently can’t break free of the mindset they’re creating for him and so many others, so that our country can become a haven for top-down, ‘we’re all in this together for the greater good’ government and therefore we need all kinds of mandates and restrictions to ‘stay safe’ from global warming, viruses, Trump, disinformation, and God knows what else.

The population can be controlled with fear. Mr. Frietag supposes this is just theory that power-mongers in our deep state would never implement.

Whoever is behind all this nonsense that’s happened for the past two years knows very well that the population can be scared into obedience. This is why we see tourists from NJ walking around with masks on, scared and obedient. They’re such good liberals, ready as ever at the first opportunity to use an iron first to ensure compliance for the greater good because of course anyone who doesn’t do what they think is best is full of ‘misinformation,’ which used to be called ‘differences of opinion.’

            Stop believing the lies.

  2. This appears to be related to the investigation regarding the material that should have been preserved in government hands, including classified material, that Donald Trump illegally took from the White House after his Presidency ended.

A federal judge issued the search warrant after being presented with probable cause which described the place to be searched and what they were looking for. It should be noted that the Director of the FBI si a Trump appointee and it is long standard policy for the Justice Department of all administrations not to comment, except in court, on its investigations. While the Justice Department cannot release the warrant per its policies, Donald Trump who recieved the warrant certainly can and it would be helpful instead of just speculation and outrage to actually know what was in it.

It migh also be good to apply the Obama test to this situation. If former President Obama had illegally taken 15 boxes of material including classifed docuements to his home after he left the White House, what would our reaction be? Would we want him to be investigated? If there was a strong possiblity that items had still not returned years after his leaving, would we want his residence to be searched as part of an investigation into the breaking of the law.?

    • It WAS NOT A Federal Judge. YOU ARE AN IDIOT! It was a MAGISTRATE Judge. there is a HUGE difference. Federal Judges are nomintated, approved and voted on in Washington DC. A MAGISTRATE JUDGE is below a Federal Judge….Appointed Federal EMPLOYEE Judges are TOO BUSY to handle smaller cases…which is why after appointed from DC, Federal Judges APPOINT A “””CIVILIAN MAGISTRATE””” judge to do the smaller stuff….A CIVILIAN… paid by the court…divorces, child custody, small crime etc. THIS WAS NOT AN APPOINTED FEDERAL BENCH JUDGE that APPROVED a search warrant! Further? NO FEDERAL BENCH judge would allow such….a search warrant on an EX PRESIDENT? THEY WOULD DEMAND A SIMPLE SUBPOENA FIRST..for documents wanted!. You are a biased idiot…. check the FACTS before you post…but what the heck…you are just the usual VT Lib numb nut.

      • The Republican Party that I know and respect is one that believes in law and order and that no person, even a ex-President is above the law

President Trump broke the law when he took material directly related to his Presidency from the White House to his private home. The Federal Magistrate Judge from the Southern District of Florida was an appropirate legal entity from which to obtain a search warrant in a criminal case for possible government material not yet returned.

The FBI is requried to give an inventory of any items taken in a search to the party involved. While they cannot release the inventory, Donald Trump can. It would be easy to clear this all up and for Trump to actually show it was a “witch hunt” if he released both the search warrant and the inventory of what was taken. If no documents or items that should have been government property were found in the search, this is indeed a serious matter for the Justice Department. If government property was illegally taken by the ex-President this is indeed a serious matter for Donald Trump.

Time to put up or shut up and let the chips fall where they may on whoever made some pretty serious misteps.

        • Hillary had over 33,000 e-mails under subpoena that disappeared, no investigation.
You’re a clown. You’re trying to crap on our heads and telling us it’s a mud slide.

          • Says the person here that it literally regurgitating the MSM talking points.

YOU cannot analyze objectively Gary Cassady because all your ears listen to is what the Democrats are saying.
You listen to the right simply to tell us everything we are saying is wrong.. that is not taking in information to analyze objectively, it’s being a useful idiot.

        • Have you seen the Mar a Lago search warrant, Mr. Freitag? A Yes or No answer will do. ‘Time to put up or shut up.’

        • Regardless of whether or not Trump has documents he should have turned over, surely this isn’t an offense that warrants an FBI raid on an ex-presidents residence.

If Obama had done what Trump allegedly done, does anyone in their right mind believe that the FBI would’ve conducted a raid on Obama’s residence to get the materials, and meanwhile tell them to turn off the security cameras and tell Obama’s lawyer to leave the premises, as they did at Trump’s residence?

Wouldn’t the civilized thing to do be to make a request through lawyers for the documents in question, and exhaust all non-invasive means before deciding to invade a former president’s residence?

Or is this shoot first and ask questions later?

This is what totalitarian regimes do, to assert their authority and make everywhere sure who’s boss and where the line is.

          Jim1

        • What happened to presumed innocent until proven guilty? What if Donald Trump packed nothing from the White House which a member of his staff has said? What if everything packed by staff members arrived at his compound in boxes where they sat untouched in a room and then it was realized by some Trump adversaries that some mistaken materials might have been taken? What if a meeting was arranged for the actual boxes to be viewed with full cooperation by the president with the FBI in July? What if the FBI was on a witch hunt to keep the former President from running again? What if the DOJ was fully aware that no one was hiding anything and needed desperately to find anything at all with which to convict Trump of a felony to prevent him from running again? What if everyone on the Right discovered that a simple subpoena to garner what they declared “stolen” was all that should have been issued unless, of course, we all are living in a 3rd world country (which what it seems like lately under Biden). Would you understand the outrage when you found that 30 DC FBI agents waited to do this raid until Trump was not in the State of Florida? That they took anything indiscriminately with no rhyme or reason or motive involved? That a camera revealed they also searched Melania’s clothing, cracked open and ruined a new and empty safe, and removed his attorneys from the premises. There is an outrage because no ex-president deserves this treatment which was totally unnecessary to get what the DOJ/FBI wanted. In the entire history of the USA, this has never occurred before.

      • Jeff,

Judge Who Signed Mar-A-Lago Search Warrant Exposed As Associate of Jeffrey Epstein

If there were any question as to whether or not the FBI raid on Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago residence was rife with corruption, details from the search warrant authorizing it should clear any doubt. Although information is sparse given that the warrant remains under seal, one piece of information that couldn’t be kept confidential sheds new light on the motives behind the raid.

The judge who signed off on the search warrant was Bruce E. Reinhart, United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Florida. Before assuming his office as a federal judge, Reinhart was an attorney who represented associates of Jeffrey Epstein implicated in his human trafficking conspiracy, namely; Sarah Kellen and Nadia Marcinkova.

    • Hillary Clinton ILLEGALLY took stuff, but no one raided HER house.

Oh, and she also acid-washed 30,000 government emails on her PRIVATE computer, AFTER it had been subpoenaed.

Plus, she took a hammer to her computer to utterly destroy it, per household help.

      • Willem,

        You forgot a key narrative:

Democrats good. Very, very good. Work for the people. Work for justice, truth, and to keep the earth from burning to a crisp.

Trump and his ilk very, very bad. Bad people. Paid off by oil companies, deny science, deny truth, deny justice, deny that boys are really girls and girls are really boys and tried to violently overthrow the government. Very bad people. Are for totalitarianism and everything bad one could possibly imagine.

Democrats are good, loving, kind, peaceful, sweet, loving, kind, gentle, loving, truthful, and everything good one could possibly imagine.

Republicans who hate Trump are also good and loving, just not at the level of Democrats.

Please repeat 1,000 times to get your mind right. Or, listen to the mainstream media.

  3. The Presidency.

Consider what is possible: A non-elected president is possible! And it has happened before. The short video clip spells it out.
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D0AJ59vqzzg

Please note in my 8:20 p.m. The Constitutional amendment Number and Section was left out. It is Amendment XIV, Section 3.

  4. Why the continued push:

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

  5. Ha! This is hilarious. All you righteous right winger Trumpies that wanted to overthrow a legitimate election now are pots calling the kettle black. If anyone thinks that Ted Cruz is a honest, moral, legitimate spokesperson for anything then I have a bridge to sell you.
How about finding a moral, honest, inclusive, conservative to put your energy and political efforts behind.

    • Do you mean “moral, honest, inclusive” people like Hillary Clinton – and the Uranium One donations to the Clinton Foundation, who deleted 30 thousand subpoenaed emails (evidence tampering), and who paid for the false Steele Dosier that started the Russia Hoax?

Like Joe Biden – The ‘Big Guy’, who doesn’t know anything about his son’s laptop, his son’s business in China or Ukraine, the millions paid his son by a Ukrainian oligarch, or the $30 million China invested in his son’s business? The FBI has had the Biden laptop since 2019.

Like former CIA Director John Brennan – who testified that he didn’t know Hillary Clinton commissioned the Steele Dosier?

Like former National Director of Intelligence, James Tapper, who testified that the NSA doesn’t collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?

Like former FBI Director James Comey who admitted to leaking classified information to the NYT… and oversaw falsified evidence submitted to a FISA judge?

Like the former FBI lawyer, Kevin Clinesmith who admitted to falsifying an email in order to renew the Carter Page wiretap?

Like Lois Learner, former IRS Commissioner, who plead the 5th when asked to testify about targeting conservative political action committees.

Like former Attorney General Eric Holder, held in contempt of congress for not testifying about the ‘Fast & Furious’ debacle?

Like Adam Shiff with his fake Russia Hoax evidence? Like Eric Swalwell sleeping with a Chinese spy. Like Nancy Pelosi’s husband trading stocks on insider information?

Do you mean “moral, honest, inclusive” people like those folks?

And no, none of these listed circumstances are conspiracy theories. They are all documented.

      • Ha. You assume because I loath Trump, his character, personality, narcissism, and lack of functional intelligence, that I am for all those folks you mentioned. I think Biden has done a poor job, Hillary made me throw up as does the far right and the far left political factions. We need my Republican party to be responsive to America’s issues and responsible to all Americans with morality, honesty, inclusivity, and create policies with integrity – not for the 1% and not just for a minority at the expense of the whole. The science is available to use smartly, but the will and vision doesn’t seem to be.

        • Ha, yourself. Beside Trump’s ‘character, personality, narcissism, and lack of functional intelligence’.. what law did Trump break? Have you seen the warrant for the search of his home? A yes or no answer will do.

          • Love how you slide away from my real issue, i.e, a moral Republican Party. Also, I do not know what laws Trump has broken, except trying to overthrow a legitimate election, which apparently you dismiss as inconsequential. And as such, as I have said, you must believe you would thrive under his dictatorship – and his new American Brownshirts.

          • “A system of morality which is based on relative emotional values is a mere illusion, a thoroughly vulgar conception which has nothing sound in it and nothing true.”

            Socrates

      • Beautiful Jay – All the Trump haters need to read Profiles in Corruption – Peter Schweizer who said Biden was the most corrupt politician he’d ever investigated – There is a chapter on Bernie as well! You’ll never get through to those with Trump Derangement Syndrome – the sickness is permanent and any ability to look objectively at Trump’s policies – for them – is impossible.

  6. The 4th amendment to the Constitution:

    Search and Seizure
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

  7. This is a blatant abuse use of power, I can’t wait until November and a RED wave and then
in January let the fun begin………Gitmo has room for them all, but the FBI and DOJ need to
spend some time in the Federal Prison System…….. they deserve the best, and they may
have some acquaintances there already !!

I love it when a plan comes together, let’s see if the GOP has any Cohones …………

  8. Sorry folks. We all may view this as an egregious abuse of power and an indication of massive corruption, but that’s not the news being fed to the liberals by NPR, the NY Times, the Washington Post, etc.

What the army being created to be used against truth and justice is hearing is that bad man Trump did very, very bad things and has very bad things and the good people at DOJ and FBI are doing good things in very good ways to ensure democracy and truth flourish in America, so help us God.

It’s massive and unrelenting propaganda. That’s how they can and will get away with this, and the army of people who follow the propaganda will be turned against the people calling out the corruption, calling everyone who sees anything ‘conspiracy theorists.’ Maybe soon they’ll be jailing those who spread ‘misinformation’ and are therefore aiding and abetting ‘the enemy.’

Of course, we’re enraged. Now the question will be, which force will be stronger, the force of truth or the force of endlessly repeated lies? I don’t know but I do know one thing: we need to stand tall and never stop.

    Jim1

  9. “Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime” – Joseph Stalin’s Secret Police

  10. If you’re still planning to vote note that only Myers Mermel voiced his anger about former president (and future) Donald Trump’s home being raided.

  11. Yes please everyone……email, call, contact your representatives local state fed……..and tell them what your opinion is on this and whatever else you feel important to say ……….PLEASE, our voices must be heard…….

  12. It get’s worse. Teh un-elected Magistrae Judge in south florida…tuens out he also repsented some of Jeffrey Epstein’s associates…astounding.

“Why did a low-level, unconfirmed, unappointed magistrate judge sign off on the most consequential FBI warrant in decades? If any warrant application demanded the eyes of a real judge, it would be one targeting the former President of the United States. Yet, this judge was happy to give the FBI what they wanted while the FBI was happy to accept.

That seems almost inconsequential, though, compared to what else we now know about Reinhardt. Astonishingly, he quit his job as a prosecutor to go work for infamous sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s associates, and he helped secure immunity deals for many of the low-life enablers who surrounded Epstein.”

  13. It get’s worse. It turns out that the DOJ and FBI purposely used a CIVILIAN MAGISTRATE JUDGE in south florida to get the search warrant. Usually the established legal course is to get a SUBPOENA first and if that does not work, then a warrant to search. The FBI and DOJ did not take this to a sitting Federal Judge for review….but a CIVILIAN MAGISTRATE…and you can bet he is a liberal Dem…his name is out there. I am VERY sure that if the FBI and DOJ brought this to a real FEDERAL JUDGE…even if they are a very liberal one…no way would any Federal judge put his name on a search warrant for an EX PRESIDENT without attempting to get what they seek via a SUBPOENA first. So for all intents, this was set up using KGB and secret police tactics. Vladimir Putin and President Xi in China are LOVING it. The USA has become them!

  14. The FBI raid on President Trump’s residence is an act of tyranny! This is not business as usual, this is a blatant, corrupt abuse of power. This should frighten people regardless of their political conviction or view of Donald Trump. Agencies of a government accountable to the people cannot be used as a political weapon against them. Imagine if Republicans get elected and the situation is reversed; raids on Biden’s house, or Schumer, or Pelosi, or you. This must be stopped! If it can happen to the President of the US it can happen to you and me! SPEAK UP!
