Report: Green New Deal will impose a $75,000 per year cost on swing-state households

By Chris White

Americans in nearly a dozen swing states could expect to spend roughly $75,000 per year if the Green New Deal is ever implemented, according to a report Wednesday from a conservative nonprofit group.

The so-called GND would cost households an average of $74,287 and $76,683 in Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, among others, a report from the Competitive Enterprise Institute noted. CEI worked with Power the Future and the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty on the report.

Sen. Bernie Sanders

The Green New Deal is backed by progressive lawmakers including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., among others.

“Right now, our booming national economy and record low unemployment rate is driven by abundant, domestic, reliable, and inexpensive energy produced by millions of men and women across the country,” Daniel Turner, Executive Director of Power the Future, said in a statement.

He added: “Any policy that proposes to reverse this success is a threat to jobs, to rural communities, to national security, and to the very prosperity that Americans are experiencing.” Power the Future is a 501(c)4 group that was founded to promote and defend people who work in the energy industry.

CEI President Kent Lassman made a similar argument. “Our analysis shows that, if implemented, the Green New Deal would cost for American households at least tens of thousands of dollars annually on a permanent basis,” said CEI President Kent Lassman.

“Perhaps that’s why exactly zero Senate Democrats, including the resolution’s 12 co-sponsors, voted for the Green New Deal when they had the chance,” he concluded. The Washington, D.C.-based think tank’s report builds on a study the group produced in July showing Americans wold incur massive expenses if the GND passes.

Other reports have made similar findings. The GND could cost up to $93 trillion over ten years, a report from right-leaning group American Action Forum (AAF) noted in 2019.

All told, that amounts to $36,100 to $65,300 per American household per year to meet the lofty proposal’s goals, AAF reported in February 2019. The plan initially intended on producing widespread high-speed rail, guaranteed jobs, universal health care and refurbishing every building in the country.

Republicans in the Senate torpedoed the Ocasio-Cortez’s legislation in March 2019 as Democrats called the vote a dog-and-pony show. The GOP defeated the proposal 57-0; Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the bill a socialistic ploy designed to kill the economy.

Still, Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts are still on board with the idea.

Sanders revealed his own GND in August 2019, promising everything from “virtually free” electricity and a “hunger-free” transition to green energy from fossil fuels. The democratic socialist’s nearly 14,000-page memo also lays out how he will deal with a variety of social justice issues.

  1. Sooooo, based on this article and the fine proposed laws coming out of the vermont legislature, we in Vermont are the canary in the coal mine. Kiss it off.

  2. Vermont Yankee had to be shutdown and sold off, to pay for the initiation of the GND initiative. The perpetrators lied, and spread fear amongst the unsuspecting, all the while knowing the truth. I know a crew foreman who searched all the underground pipes carrying coolant to the heat exchangers. And when the extensive work was completed, there were no leaks. The weak, trace, radioactive material in the soil turned out to be everywhere in VT’s soil, naturally occurring just like radon. But that didn’t matter, the Green Energy camp used the news media to discredit the Foreman’s report and further the shutdown. The GND is not about saving VT’s weather, it’s about lining a few people pockets. And they don’t care about what it cost households in VT because it will be going into their bank accounts.

  3. NUCLEAR POWER, CLEAN EFFICIENT, FEW HUMAN WORKERS, RELIABLE 24/7/365

WHAT ARE THE REASONS AGAINST NUCLEAR. IRRATIONAL FEAR, HIROSHIMA ETC.

DOMESTIC NUCLEAR POWER IS SAFE !!

    – 50 YEARS OF NUCLEAR SUBMARINES WITH DOZENS OF SAILORS LIVING RIGHT THERE, FUELED FOR YEARS WITH ONE CHARGE. 3 MILE ISLAND, NOT A PERSON HURT, UNLESS RUN OVER IN THE AMBULANCE PANIC. AIRCRAFT CARRIERS POWERED FOR YEARS, ON ONE ‘LOAD’ NO COAL, NO BUNKER OIL

THE JAPANESE DISASTER – A HORRIBLE LOCATION – LESSON LEARNED. RUSSIA, A VERY OLD DEFECTIVE DESIGN – LESSON LEARNED.

LETS USE OUR EXISTING POWER LINE INFRASTRUCTURE. VERNON, AND THE LOCATION WE GET CANADIAN POWER. TWO REACTORS, ONE A BREEDER REACTOR, TO RECHARGE THE FUEL CELLS WHILE STILL PRODUCING ELECTRICITY ONE NORTH, ONE SOUTH

TWO AND DONE FOR ANOTHER 50 YEARS. ZERO CARBON, AND A NICE PRICE – INSTEAD OF BEING RAPED$ BY THE CLIMATE $NAKE OIL $ALESMEN

ZERO CLIMATE DAMAGE. CHEAP, RELIABLE, SAFE ALL THE POWER WE WANT, EVEN RUN YOUR ALL ELECTRIC HOME AND CAR!

  4. So, sit down and put a price on of Socialist Sanders ” Free Agenda ” promotions,
Medicare for all, Green new deal, Free college reimbursement and whatever else
    he feels your entitled to

    Wake up, People !!

    • There is this scowling young High School girl in Sweden who has all the answers.

She is like a Devine Oracle.

Ask her nicely, pray a little, and she will write you a check to be spent on being green.
