The latest headache for Democratic Socialist darling Julia Salazar includes the uncovering of documents showing she was arrested in 2011 on suspicion of trying to access the bank account of the former wife of retired baseball all-star Keith Hernandez.
Salazar was also accused of stealing over $13,000 in cash and goods from the home of Kai Hernandez.
The news was first reported Thursday by The Daily Mail, which provided legal documents showing a civil complaint made by Kai Hernandez in 2013.
According to the Daily Mail, Salazar house-sat for Kai Hernandez in 2010. When she returned to her home in Jupiter, Florida, Kai Hernandez told police that Salazar had stolen $11,800 in cash, $1,175 in Pottery Barn vouchers and $950 in wine.
Salazar, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is running for a state Senate seat in New York.
Audio obtained by Tablet Magazine allegedly shows that Salazar made three separate attempts in December 2010 to impersonate Kai Hernandez in order to gain access to her accounts at UBS Bank.
A financial adviser quickly alerted Kai Hernandez an hour after the final call, leading her to file a police report two days later.
Several months later, according to Tablet, Salazar was arrested. Charges were eventually dropped after the state attorney’s office felt “there was not a likelihood of conviction” based on her voice alone, according to a detective at the Tequesta Police Department.
Later, Salazar sued Kai Hernandez for defamation and alleged that Kai had actually attempted to impersonate her in order to cause a wrongful arrest.
After four years, the suit was eventually dropped after Kai Hernandez’s battle with cancer took a turn for the worse. The case was eventually settled out of court.
Throughout the allegations, Kai Hernandez alleged that Salazar was having an ongoing affair with her former husband, the famed baseball player and sports commentator.
Both Salazar and Keith Hernandez deny they had any romantic relationship.
Buried in the court documents shows that Salazar was once a neighbor of the Hernandez couple, poking yet another hole in her story that she grew up “working class,” despite having a father who had a six-figure salary.
The Salazar campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
