McClaughry: Gun registration, the first step

By John McClaughry

A Democrat legislator has proposed a bill requiring mandatory licensing, registration and insurance of firearms in Vermont.

state of Vermont

Rep. Michael Mrowicki

H.520, introduced by Rep. Mike Mrowicki (Democrat of Putney), would require all firearms owners to have a license to possess a firearm and an insurance card indicating that the owner has firearms liability insurance. And it would require that each of the owner’s firearms be registered.

There’s nothing novel about this. The provisions of Mrowicki’s bill undoubtedly have wide acceptance among the gun control activists. This is probably known as the moderate gun control solution, the radical one being a ban on possession of firearms and their progressive confiscation, without compensation, like a harmful substance.

Can you imagine what the Founding Fathers would have thought if, in colonial America, the British overlords had at their disposal a list of every firearm owned by every American? They would do what they actually tried to do at Lexington and Concord in 1775: send a regiment of soldiers out to seize the weapons and ammunition stored by the patriots to take up when British tyranny became unbearable, as it soon did.

That’s why they installed in our Bill of Rights its Second Amendment, and its Vermont Constitutional counterpart Article 16 — the right to keep and bear arms for the defence of themselves and the state, so the government can’t force the people to disclose where they held their ultimate means of protection against resistance to tyranny.

  1. Just wondering: Has anyone given a single thought as to where AI fits into al of this brouhaha?

    Just asking for a friend.

  2. A Marxist legislator, there, fixed the for you.

Dear editor, we need to stop allowing Marxist pawns to hide under the guise of Democratic Party and Republican Party, it only allows them to do more harm with impunity.

  3. Rep. Mrowicki is emboldened and “jumping the gun”. Historically these kind of issues have been dealt with incrementally. First you demand that all sales be done with a NICS background check, then argue in the next session that the “loophole” law is ineffective and can only be implemented if the state has a registry.
The camel’s nose is already well under the tent on gun restrictions in Vermont.

  4. Rep. Michael Mrowicki should be removed immediately for treason against his oath of office and treason against the people of Vermont.
It’s time to start hanging traitors again, before this goes too far.

    • Where oh, where has our little party gone?
Oh where, oh where has the VTGOP gone?

See, the uniparty believes Vermont is almost perfect, just a few more rights and dollars taken away and we’ll have the perfect New World Order……just a little bit more.

Which is why nothing is changing in Vermont, we are a top down run state if ever there was.

      • Only because the People continue to allow it.

A self governing republic is incompatible with political parties and the idol worship of the imbeciles that think they can vote things right.

    • BUT, nothing in this hideous proposal is in real conflict with the state constitution. I doubt that the writers of our constitution ever considered that there would such egregious gun haters in Vermont. The gun haters will some day say that “Yes, Vermonters may own firearms but only single shot rifles”.

      • A license and insurance to exercise a constitutional right listed in the Bill Of Rights is most definitely unconstitutional. Rights are not granted by the government, privileges are, like driving. Imagine a license to vote or to speak, not constitutional. The Bill of Rights is a demand for the government to stay away, it lists what the government can’t do to the people. Trying to require people to get a license to exercise their constitutional rights is also asinine and anyone who supports such an idea has no right to be in the legislature.

  5. The overarching theme with Mike Mrowicki and his political brothern is they are incapable of thinking for themselves. Void of original ideas or premise. They are like the classmate that copies someone else’s homework. The legislation they put forth is not their own. It is copied and pasted all over the United States and introduced in multiple States, multiple times, verbatim. It’s a scripted, repeated agenda that they are compensated for to put forth. Group think at the highest, disengenuous, ad nauseum level. They are as pathetic as they are insufferable. They continue to play the losing hand with the gall to think persistent indignance will prevail. All prior defeats be damned, will continue to push the agenda because their bank account is paramount over everything else. They truly are ignorant and beyond redemption.

  6. Ha Ha Ha Ha. Anyone who register their guns are fools. But don’t worry folks our new governor “Mr. Constitutionality”, Phil Scott will veto this.

Robert A. Heinlein: “There are no dangerous weapons. There are only dangerous men”.

Ronald Reagan: “Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the people must be stopped, by force if necessary”.

I WILL NOT OBEY – I WILL NOT COMPLY – MOLON LABE

  7. SHALL NOT INFRINGE you moron mirowicki… If this stupidity prevails just claim you lost them when you were out fishing. It might take a while but the SCOTUS would definitionally overturn this abomination on the 2nd amendment. Where do these idiot come from anyway?

    • I did look him up and he is a flatlander who moved here at 27 and went to Marlboro College, which explains a lot. Also a social worker which means a government wonk and family from Poland so he should know better about gun restrictions. Throw his azz out of here like Ethan and the boy’s would have…

      • Given his apparent Polish heritage, one would think he would indeed have a different view regarding private ownership of firearms. He should study the events endured by Pastor Dawid Pawlowski (born in Poland) of Canada and the debacle surrounding his arrests and treatment during the COVID scandemic. Although firearms were not a factor in that situation, it clearly demonstrates what can happen when individual rights are dictated by a Marxist government. Then again, it’s likely that Mr. Mrowicki has no working knowledge of how a Constitutional Republic is supposed to operate. The Bill of Rights was adopted to define those areas which are hands-off to the government.
        ‘…shall not infringe,”

      • I agree and can only ask when Vermonters are going to wake up and vote out all these socialist politicians who do not care about our constitutional rights? It just amazes me why people in Vermont would want these mental midgets running our lives.

    • C’mon man! You know that the words “shall not be infringed” only applies to abortion rights.

  8. Good heavens! What gets me is that, where I live, this kind of regulation is not popular at all. The vast majority of anti-firearms support seem in Chittenden and Washington counties where most of the urban population resides and the national political profile seems prevalent in these two counties. However, In rural Windsor County I see very little of this liberal fodder. The same in Windham as well. The two northwest counties dictate to the rest of our state what their agenda consists of and, of course, it’s going to cost the average hunter and target sport shooters an appalling price. I am not a native of this state. I moved here 14 years ago and greatly admired this state’s libertarian ideas and loved the idea that there were virtually no gun laws and yet crime seemed nonexistent. Now the liberal agenda….the urban cancer has infected us. Makes me very sad.

    • It’s not going to cost anybody anything, even if it did pass. You’d be a damned fool and honestly, a coward, if you complied with it. Any act of the legislature that is repugnant to either the state or federal constitution is NULL & VOID, never having the force of law at any point and it is your absolute right to ignore it. In fact, it’s your duty as an American to ignore it as well as to arrest anyone that tries to enforce it.

These clowns want to make a public vote for treason, on the record for all to see, I dare them. All the evidence that is needed to remove them, by process of law if possible, by force of arms if necessary.

  9. Obviously Mr. Mrowicki has not familiarized himself with either the US Constitution or the Vermont State constitution, both of which he took an oath to defend when he took office. The mere introduction of such legislation should be a reason to have him, the bill’s co-sponsors, and anyone else who does likewise removed from office. “…shall NOT be infringed.”

    • What! You want Mrowicki to read the Constitution. Communists have enough to do circumventing the Constitution. And you even want him to honor his oath of office. What would all the commies in Putney think of him?

    • This is where it got him.

FROM THE FOUNDERS 2nd AMENDMENT by Stephen P. Halbrook

1774 – British General Gage takes over as governor of the Massachusetts colony and 36 Tories are appointed to the Massachusetts council by King George III

Gage restricts the distribution of gunpowder and has 300 barrels of gunpowder seized. Gage realizing he is outnumbered restricts powder & shot trying to use “ammo control” to disarm the people. Guns, powder and shot were however considered private property.

On October 17th Gage is ordered to confiscate arms especially long guns but knows this is not practicable and as the colonies get wind of what is happening in Massachusetts start arming themselves.

King George III bans the importation of guns to the colonies also the importation of gunpowder, saltpeter and lead.

1775 – On April 16th the Battle of Lexington & Concord takes place and the British start seizing arms in earnest. Women are hiding guns and children are making cartridges.

April 17th Gage starts to disarm Boston and on June 17th Gage proclaims that anyone in Boston who has not turned their arms are to be considered enemies of his majesty. On July 6th in Virginia Jefferson and Dickenson draw up the Declaration of Causes of Taking Up Arms and militias start to form.

On May 10th Ethan Allen captures the British Fort Ticonderoga. September 16th the New York Provincial Congress orders the seizure of arms with the promise to be compensated
for them. (The First Buy Back? ) Bills of Attainder’s, or legislative trials are held without the ability to rebut the charges.

1776 – In April the British order the Repression Of Pamphlets (Thought Crime) and firearms and other properties are seized and forfeited.

July 4th, 1776, The Colonies Declare their independence.

1781 – After the British suffered a major defeat at Yorktown, many politicians in Britain started to highly disagree with continuing the war and the Prime Minister, Lord North handed in his resignation in March of 1782. During the Revolutionary war, shortly after, in April, the British Commons voted that the war in America should be ended. In late November 1782 preliminary peace articles were signed and drafted, but the war only formally came to an end when the Treaty of Paris was signed on September 4, 1783. The last British troops were withdrawn from New York in November 1783 and the Paris treaty was ratified by the U.S. Congress on January 14, 1784.

      • Very interesting that our legislature brought forth and the governor signed laws banning certain firearms and standard capacity magazines from being imported into Vermont. Of course, this was later upheld by the Vermont Supreme court that apparently can’t read the state constitution or the USA constitution either. The Bruen Supreme court case has made all of these laws unconstitutional but yet we have to suffer until the Supreme court strikes them down again in particular cases making their way to the court as I type this.

If these gun laws worked so well, why is it that the liberal run cities are awash in gun crime and murders. Places like Chicago, St Louis, Los Angeles and whole states like California, Colorado, Washington, etc. Gun laws don’t work because criminals could care less what laws they pass. So, It appears that laws like this registration and insurance is a play right out of Hitler, Stalin, Castro and any other tin pan dictator’s plan to disarm the people who aren’t the problem and never have been. They can’t confiscate firearms unless they know where they are and who has what.

New York tried this with so-called assault weapons and compliance was about 20%. Cananda also tried this and eventually gave up because of the cost of keeping it up and the uselessness of the program. Canadians are facing their own little dictator and are very likely to send him somewhere. Freedom is about being free. This transplant and Anti American Mrowicki should pull this foolishness before it goes any further. I thank our founding fathers for the vision to see centuries in advance that people like this guy would steel your freedom and make you bow down to his non-authority. There are thousands of legally owned firearms in Vermont and no one is going to come and get them. It’s long past the time that these unconstitutional laws are stopped in their tracks. The first move is to vote these people out. If that doesn’t work, we will have to see what happens next.

  10. Democrat Rep.Mike Mrowicki is an out and out racist :).. He wants to make his law that “..would require all firearms owners to have a license to possess a firearm, an insurance card indicating that the owner has firearms liability insurance. And it would require that each of the owner’s firearms be registered.”

Clearly this bill (and he) is racist…because it falls hardest on white, law biding, honest Vermonters….I can’t wait until this guys takes his new law – to the street…and approaches all the Black drug dealers to demand their credentials for gun ownership, demand to see their license, their insurance and registration proof…….What a laugh that would be 🙂

This dope has no clue….bad guys, criminals, crazy people and, yes….Black drug dealers…WILL NEVER COMPLY!….”VTGON”

    • Yup Jeff, criminals don’t follow the law that’s why their called criminals. Idiot leftists can’t comprehend that written in stone fact. Name sounds east european, you’d think he’d have more sense about government restrictions on guns.

    • Thank you for pointing out that according to leftist doctrine, any demand to produce a govt-issued ID to engage in a Constitutional Right is RACIST.
