Attorneys general file amicus brief in support of handgun age requirement

By Carly Moran | The Center Square

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a joint amicus brief alongside 21 other attorneys general to support the federal government’s prohibition of handguns and ammunition to those 21 and older.

The attorneys general filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals 5th Circuit. The amicus brief is written “on the merits,” making arguments on how the Court should have ruled on a case it already agreed to hear. The coalition argues that the Second Amendment allows for governmental regulations, such as the federal age requirement to purchase handguns and ammunition.

“Protecting our communities from gun violence requires multiple solutions, including laws already on the books,” Mayes said. “For nearly 60 years, federal law has prohibited the sale of handguns from federally licensed dealers to individuals under 21. The Second Amendment allows for such age-based restrictions, and I urge the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to affirm the district court ruling and allow this critical safeguard to stand.”

The federal handgun restriction law is currently followed in 19 states, as well as the District of Columbia. Many of these states are involved in the coalition, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.

  1. They are well organized. Not much for common sense, fairness but all about getting their results by any means necessary. Well schooled in the art of subversion are they.

  2. Well, I guess it’s time to return to 21 as the age of majority. Any adult aged 18 or older should be able to purchase a handgun as long as they pass the NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) background check. You’ll notice how it has the word “instant” right in the title. Not 72 hours but “INSTANT” Gun violence is a buzz word created by the Left. As any teacher of English would tell you, you can’t have gun violence because firearms are inanimate objects. And, who came up with the notion that the 2A “allows for governmental regulations”. The Bill of Rights tells the government what they are not allowed to do. Such as, “…the right of the people to keep and bear arms, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED”. (emphasis added) It’s no surprise that VT would join this coalition of leftist commie AG’s.

    • exactly, if your not competent enough to own a firearm your not competent enough to vote or be drafted. The criminals and illegals will never follow these laws as their CRIMINALS. Go take away the guns in Chicago first you leftist hacks, since that’s one of the most restrictive gun states.
