Burlington group takes down anti-trans stickers while officials consider their options

One said no one is ever “‘born into the wrong body.’” Another called gender treatment “lifelong medical dependency” and “a business model.” Discussions on the issue have repeatedly raised questions about whether the stickers constitute protected speech.

Paul Dame: Legislative pay and recruitment

Among the many poorly formed bills that Democrats send to Gov. Scott, the most audacious one, and one that is likely to be sustained, was the bill that doubled legislative pay.

Top teacher union boss says unionized schools are better: Parents evidently disagree

The logical conclusion to draw from the data is that there is something seriously wrong with the quality of education in schools where teachers and other educators are subject to union monopoly bargaining.

Roper: Lawmakers seek ways to continue discriminating against Christians

The Blob is banking on the idea that Vermonters would rather eliminate all school choice in Vermont than allow some — any — parents to choose to send their kids to a religious school with taxpayer dollars.

Steve MacDonald: Dover, New Hampshire, bans book banning — or something

The Dover City Council “overwhelmingly” approved a resolution last week. It denounces partisan political and “unconstitutional” book banning, which is amusing given that Dover is run by political partisans that hate the U.S. Constitution.

McClaughry: The possibly ‘historic’ veto session

The word “historic” is seriously overused these days, too often to describe events more curious than momentous. A case can be made, however, for the events taking place this week in the “veto session.”

Keelan: The state of Vermont does not print money

Vermont is a state with an opioid epidemic, homelessness and housing crises, gun violence in once peaceful towns, and a lack of employees. We cannot legislate or tax our way out of all the difficulties confronting Vermont that have been neglected and ignored.

Roper: The legislature just decided to start automatically deducting 5% of Vermonters’ paychecks

The state will then automatically deduct 5 percent of said employees’ paychecks (increasing to 8 percent over time), putting the money into that account — without the employees’ consent!

Alison Despathy: From democracy to technocracy

At the statehouse this past session, a majority of Vermont legislators took a brazen, controversial and unconstitutional step away from representative government towards technocracy — defined as rule based on an elite of “technical experts.”

Bob Orleck: No adequate solutions to homeless problem on the horizon

It seems that the only solution we hear much about for the homeless, most of whom have mental health or drug abuse issues, is a stay at a hotel, bus tickets out of town or a prison cell. That’s what happens when you tear down institutions.

Gov. Phil Scott Facebook

Affordability is governor’s focus for veto session

The Republican governor, who previously vetoed the state budget, said that keeping Vermont affordable for current and potential residents remains his highest priority as the legislative body returns to Montpelier to rehash the state budget.
