The wife of Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul explained the unexpected attack on her husband which left him severely injured and in immense pain.
In a Wednesday op-ed, Dr. Kelley Paul addressed the attack on her husband that occurred outside of their home in Bowling Green, Ky., which left the senator with six broken ribs, pleural effusion and pneumonia.
Paul made it clear that her husband was attacked by their neighbor, Rene Boucher, and that there was no prior altercation between the two, calling out the media for falsely describing the incident.
“This was not a ‘scuffle,’ a ‘fight’ or an ‘altercation,’ as many in the media falsely describe it,” Paul wrote. “It was a deliberate, blindside attack.”
The senator’s wife also described his recovery process and how tough it has been, mentioning there were nights she thought she would have to call an ambulance.
“There have been several nights where I had my hand on my phone ready to call 911 when his breathing became so labored it was terrifying,” Paul wrote.
Paul said her husband and Boucher did not have any past issues, nor was theirs a dispute which led to Boucher’s attack. Paul mentioned that the senator has “rarely” seen Boucher due to the fact he is always traveling and spends most of his time in Washington, D.C.
“The only ‘dispute’ existed solely in the attacker’s troubled mind,” Paul wrote, “until, on a beautiful autumn day, he ran down the hill on our property and slammed his body into Rand’s lower back as he stood facing away, wearing noise canceling headphones to protect his ears from the lawnmower.”
“This Thanksgiving weekend, instead of playing golf with his sons or enjoying our annual touch football game with family and neighbors, Rand will be in pain,” Paul concluded.
