Trump may close US southern border ‘next week’

By Evie Fordham

President Donald Trump threatened to close the U.S. southern border in a tweet Friday if Mexico “doesn’t immediately stop” illegal immigration into the U.S.

“If Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States throug[h] our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING … the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “This would be so easy for Mexico to do, but they just take our money and ‘talk.’ Besides, we lose so much money with them, especially when you add in drug trafficking etc.), that the Border closing would be a good thing!”

Trump had said he “[m]ay close the Southern Border!” on Twitter Thursday.

The president is raising the issue as recent reports show that the U.S.-Mexico border is at a “breaking point.” Customs and Border Protection was forced to close down highway checkpoints near El Paso, Texas, to shift resources to deal with a spike in illegal immigrant apprehensions this past weekend, reported the Texas Tribune.

Trump talked about closing the southern border in response to inaction from the Mexican government during a Thursday night rally in Michigan as well.

“Mexico could stop them so easy. … If they don’t, it’s going to cost them a hell of a lot of money. … We will close the damn border,” he said.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador weighed in on Trump’s accusation that he was “doing nothing” to stop illegal immigration into the U.S. before the rally happened Thursday.

“We respect president Trump’s position, and we are going to help,” Lopez Obrador told reporters Thursday, adding, “this is a problem of the United States, or it’s a problem of the Central American countries. It’s not up to us Mexicans, no.”

Trump’s warning comes as he continues trying to secure funding for a southern border wall, which he promised to building during his campaign. Democratic lawmakers are not happy that the Pentagon plans to reallocate $1 billion for border wall construction.

  1. Trump cannot close the southern border.Where do you think all of the car parts and most of the actual cars are manufactured?
The flow of actual Mexicans coming over the border has slowed to a trickle. This is because we have exported millions of jobs to our southern neighbor. It’s hard to compete with low pay,no benefits,no workman’s comp,no Social Security,no environmental regulations, and no OSHA.

If we ever had a REAL WAR we’d be in real trouble. We don’t even make bolts and screws anymore.

  2. Good, it’s about time, this southern border fiasco should have bee closed when the first caravan
    came to town !!

They have No respect for our laws, as we already have 20 million running around the country
Close it down until we get it secured and we know exactly who’s coming in !!…No Mas, No Mas.

We spend more every year supporting these “Criminals ” than any Wall-Fence-Barrier would
    ever cost………………..

  3. Correction
Foreigners already own $10 TRILLION MORE in assets in the US than the US owns abroad.

  4. That border should have been shut down 50 years ago.
California would still be a sane state, instead of being overrun by Mexicans and other South Americans.
Now Mexico has a $100 BILLION per year trade SURPLUS with the US, thanks to Bill Clinton’s NAFTA.
Before NAFTA it had chronic deficits.
Japan, South Korea and Europe have used Mexico to gang up on the US.
They ship their parts and assemble them into cars in their plants in Mexico, which they ship to the US duty free, but the US cannot get its cars into these countries.
Thé US is being s….d by our so-called trading partners to the tune of about $900 BILLION in deficits per year.
Foreigners already own about 10 TRILLION in US productive assets, on which they earn at least $500 billion per year, in addition to their trade surplus.
Just google to get the numbers.
