After a mass shooting Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas, killed 19 children and two teachers, Gov. Phil Scott is calling for new federal gun control measures, and Vermont’s education secretary is reminding communities about important resources that may prevent future tragedies.
How many more senseless mass shootings will occur while we try to blame or regulate tools, when we have not — and apparently will not — take the simple precaution of providing real protection?
The New Hampshire legislature has passed HB1178, a bill prohibiting “the state from enforcing any federal statute, regulation, or Presidential Executive Order that restricts or regulates the right of the people to keep and bear arms.”
Speaking of shootings, Mr. Mayor — at 4 a.m. this Sunday morning a man was shot and injured in the North Willard Street, Burlington neighborhood. This happened in your backyard and on your watch. Unlike the mass murder in Buffalo, this is a shooting that you can do something about.
“If prior offenders make up 90 percent of our murderers, and ‘ghost guns’ are involved in less than 1 percent of our murders, why are we concentrating on the ghost guns rather than on the murderers?” The answer, Williamson concludes, is “politics, theater and cowardice.”

S.265, an act relating to expanding criminal threatening to include threats to third persons, passed in the State House of Representatives on April 12, 2022, by a vote of 89-32.
The president “wants the government to have a list of every law abiding American who owns a gun. He also wants to keep a list of names of people who buy replacement parts. And he announced he wants to ban many of these guns.”
S.4, an act relating to procedures involving firearms, passed in the State House of Representatives on March 17, 2022, by a vote of 90-42.
Now, S.4 faces a possible veto threat of its own. It passed the House by a 90-42 margin: 10 votes shy of the 100 needed to override a gubernatorial veto, should it occur.
