These proposed amendments set standards for auto manufacturers that will reduce greenhouse gas and criteria air pollutant emissions from passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and engines that are delivered for sale or placed in service in Vermont.
There is a very real possibility that these AC units could do little to keep the most vulnerable cool. And that’s not necessarily because of climate change, but because New England’s electric grid could soon have to use California’s method of rolling blackouts to maintain a semblance of civilization.
The bill includes $369 billion in total climate spending, and will give the EPA more than $40 billion in the current fiscal year to combat climate change and secure “environmental justice.” The EPA’s enacted budget for 2022’s fiscal year was about $9.5 billion.
To be sure, Russia is throttling gas supplies, but what they won’t mention is how Europe became enthralled to Russia and its vast natural gas reserves in the first place. The fact is, Europe spent decades replacing fossil fuels with intermittent, unreliable renewable energy, largely from wind and solar.
Coal-fired power plants in several states are delaying planned shutdowns in order to avoid blackouts and energy shortages as the delayed development of renewable energy sources is leaving gaps in states’ power grids amid high energy demand.
“The average EV owner continues to be male, aged 40-55 years old, with an annual household income of more than $100,000 (2019),” according to a Fuels Institute 2021 report. A BlastPoint report found that the annual income of a family “ready to buy an EV” was $150,000 in 2021.
The Great Barrier Reef was presumed dead from climate change and rebounded spectacularly. While this won’t convince anyone that climate change isn’t a problem, it does give us reason to hope.

“Expensive energy – pursuing policies that raise the cost of energy – directly and negatively impacts New Hampshire families and businesses and the quality of life in our state,” the report’s authors wrote. “As such, the priority of the strategy is to organize goals around cost-effective energy policies.”
For now at least, developers have the option to choose fossil fuels over “green” heating systems that don’t work in cold weather. That could change if Vermont adopts something close to the Clean Heat Standard in 2023.
GMP customers were not asked to reduce power use during this time — they could use the energy they needed to stay comfortable and safe during the heat, without limitations.
The EV-charging conservation request raised eyebrows around Vermont because the State of Vermont is committed by legislation to follow California emissions regulations, which recently were upgraded to ban all sales of virtually all new gas or diesel powered vehicles by 2035.
