“At least five right-wing Supreme Court justices seem poised to overturn Roe v. Wade and abolish the constitutional right of women to have an abortion. In my view, the United States Senate cannot and it must not allow that to happen.”
Corporations previously outspoken about hot-button social issues have stayed quiet on the likely overturning of Roe v. Wade after a dramatic fight between Disney and Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis over the company’s political activism.
The “Women’s Health Protection Act” (WHPA), introduced by Democratic Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal and cosponsored by 47 other Senate Democrats, would create a right to abortions before viability, which is generally defined at around six months.
Several pro-abortion candidates for office have issued false and misleading statements about abortion and the effect Proposal 5/Article 22 would have in Vermont. Prop 5 goes beyond Roe v. Wade and beyond abortion. Vermonters should not be hoodwinked by this disinformation campaign.
“Three years ago, we enacted a law that affirms the fundamental rights of all women and ensures reproductive health decisions remain between a woman and her health care provider – totally free from government interference. … This will remain true in Vermont.”
“Congress must pass legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade as the law of the land in this country NOW,” Sen. Bernie Sanders wrote. “And if there aren’t 60 votes in the Senate to do it, and there are not, we must end the filibuster to pass it with 50 votes.”
Supreme Court experts decried the unprecedented leak of the Court’s draft decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, in which justices reportedly voted to overturn Roe v. Wade.
As the previous two segments have demonstrated, because of the vague language we as Vermonters have much more to lose than abortion rights, which are already available in previous law. This segment will look at Costs to Taxpayers, Healthcare, and Who’s Watching Out for Abortion Survivors.
Proposal 5 is being hyped by politicians and the media as a means of protecting at the state level the abortion rights conferred by Roe v. Wade at the federal level. This is inaccurate, and, from a legal standpoint, dangerously so.
Prop 5 is framing abortion as the exercise of reproductive freedoms and rights, but is the absurdity here not giving you pause?
Article 22 will have significant implications for women’s mental health issues as well as the rights of mothers and fathers. In many ways, Article 22 threatens a mother’s rights to carry children to term and give birth.
