Schumer calls for Trump’s removal from office, either through impeachment or 25th Amendment

By Chuck Ross

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday called for President Donald Trump to “immediately” be removed from office, either through invoking the 25th Amendment or through impeachment.

“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president. This president should not hold office one day longer,” Schumer said in a statement, referring to the mob of Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday as lawmakers were validating the results of the Electoral College.

Schumer urged Vice President Mike Pence and members of the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows for the removal of a sitting president under certain circumstances.

“If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president,” Schumer said.

A group of House Democrats urged Pence on Wednesday to invoke the 25th amendment. Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger also called for Trump’s removal from office, becoming the first Republican to do so.

The House of Representatives impeached Trump on Dec. 18, 2019, following an inquiry into a phone call he had with Ukraine’s president in which Trump discussed Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

The Senate, which was controlled by Republicans at the time, voted to acquit Trump on Feb. 5, 2020.

If successfully impeached and removed from office, Trump would be prohibited from holding any publicly elected office in the future.

  1. All of this is the prelude to the Democrats taking complete control of our federal government. Your covid lock-downs are softening you up for the gradual lose of your Constitutional freedoms. You are already within the web of Socialism…come into my parlor said the spider to the fly. Or would the metaphor of how to boil a frog be more applicable?

  2. Correction to earlier comment.

But under existing impeachment rules, debate and votes could not begin until 1 p.m. the next day after — making the earliest possible moment for an impeachment vote one hour after President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office at noon on Jan. 20.

“The Senate trial would therefore begin after President Trump’s term has expired,” McConnell wrote, according to the Washington Post.

A post-term impeachment trial for a former president would be a historical first, as would a second impeachment trial.

  3. McConnell, Speaker of the US Senate, has issued a standard, impeachment-procedures memo, in case an article arrives from the US House

I am sure Schumer got a copy.

It states, McConnell will announce the article has arrived on January 19, and that impeachment hearings start the
day after the announcement, i.e., January 20, 2021

That means the US Senate has to conduct impeachment hearings from about 9 am to 1 pm, 20 January 2021.

Biden will be sworn in at 1 pm January 21, 2021.

After that, Trump will no longer be in office.
    The impeachment procedures end.

    • It doesn’t matter. The day after the election in 2016 the democrats were already saying he wasn’t legitimately elected and were already talking impeachment. They role out the false allegations of Russian collusion based on an illegal FISA warrant. That scam didn’t work so they roll out impeachment proceedings based on false information and nothing rising to high crimes and misdemeanors. That brings us to today where the Democrats roll out the 25th Amendment and impeachment once again for having the high crime of telling supporters evidence of voter fraud and hoping that Pence does the right thing. And he has the gall to incite rioting by saying Go in peace.

  4. I so hope they do that! It will be a great test of the new public defense barriers they are installing at the Capitol Building. They are still debating whether to go with a moat and a drawbridge. The only argument against seems to be that it is not shovel ready.
