Sanders surge: Bernie takes lead in closely watched Iowa poll

By Chuck Ross

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders surged to the lead in a closely watched poll of Iowa voters, according to results released Friday.

Twenty percent of likely Democratic caucusgoers chose Sanders as their first pick for president in the Des Moines Register-CNN-Mediacom poll ahead of Iowa’s statewide caucuses on Feb. 3. That’s a five point increase for Sanders since the same poll was conducted in November.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren (17%), former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg (16%) and former Vice President Joe Biden (15%) rounded out the top four Democrats in the latest survey.

Buttigieg, who led the November poll, lost nine points. Warren gained 1 percentage point, while Biden stayed even.

The poll, conducted from Jan. 2-8, is based on telephone interviews with 3,131 registered Iowa voters, including 701 who said they are likely to attend the 2020 Democratic caucuses. The poll of likely Democratic caucusgoers has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7%.

Sanders has surged of late despite suffering a heart attack in early October. Warren captured some of Sanders’s supporters after his illness, but her momentum has faded amid scrutiny of her Medicare for All plan.

Biden came in fourth in the latest poll; however, he holds a commanding lead in national polls. Biden is averaging 29% in recent polls, according to RealClearPolitics. Sanders is polling just above 20%, on average, while Warren is just shy of 15%.

  1. I’ve been hearing the reason Nanzi Pelosi has been holding the
“Articles” is to drag it out until the last min in Iowa so burnee is pulled
off to give dems the upper hand. Could be a very plausible reason and
they don’t have to buy him another house this way…
Now that Spartacus Booger is out the field is down to ol white guys,
a lying sqaw and a few billionaires… we have reached a short clown bus
    capacity now…

  2. I hope he gets the nomination, because America sees through the facade of Socialism. And….President Trump with eat him alive. There is nothing the Left can offer that is better than what the President has made available to Americans. My greatest fear for this election is voter fraud. Including allowing non-citizens to vote (and of course they will vote for the Left) and outright manipulation of the results. And then….after President Trump is reelected, that’s when the Left and their minions will go off the deep end.

  3. Hey, Bernie beware. The folks in Iowa know that all of your freebees just won’t fly. As the man once said, “don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched”.

  4. Well, I wouldn’t get too excited ” Bernie “, there’s a long road to go, and we’ve seen you
fall from grace before ” Clinton Vs Sanders “………you folded like a cheap suit !!

Don’t forget ” last place ” Bloomberg, stated he’ll donate $1 billion to the DNC, and that
doesn’t mean it’s for support of ” Socialist Sanders “, he knows you’re not the one that
can or will beat the President………… Idiots abound in the DNC, fools and their money.
