Republicans made midterm gains with young people

By Laurel Duggan

Republicans made gains in the midterm elections among voters under 30, a demographic that tends to lean heavily Democratic, according to the Associated Press.

Young voters swung 53% for Democratic House candidates and 41% for Republican candidates, according to the AP. The result marks a decline from recent elections: voters under 30 chose President Joe Biden over former President Donald Trump 61% to 36% in 2020, swung for Democrats 64 to 34% in 2018 House races.

The midterms were otherwise viewed as a disappointment for the GOP; Republicans had hopes for a massive red wave, but the party failed to win the Senate.

“Youngest people also have the weakest partisan attachments, so they can be more susceptible to partisan swings nationally,” Michael McDonald, a political science professor at the University of Florida, told the AP. “There’s no reason why Republicans can’t rebound among younger people.”

Voters under 45, however, were more likely to support Democrats in 2022 than they were to support Biden in 2020, according to the AP. About half of young voters said the overturning of Roe v. Wade had driven their decision to vote.

Biden moved to issue $10,000 in student loan forgiveness to borrowers earning under $125,000 annually about two months before midterms in an apparent bid to win over young voters.

Democrats will rely heavily on voters under 30 in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, according to the AP, so poor performance among young voters may be read as a warning sign for the party. McDonald, however, said the waning support for Democrats may be an anomaly and a symptom of inflation.

In addition to winning over an unusually high proportion of young voters, the GOP also won the popular vote in the 2022 election.

I just got off the phone with my representative Arthur Peterson in Clarendon Vermont

He defends the lies of the republican party and the censorship of those who want to tell the truth

I just relayed to him that after his 5-volt win I’m disappointed in voting for him

Does anyone in their right mind wonder why republicans are losing in the state of Vermont? It’s probably because there is absolutely no trust in the republican party.

He told me he felt it was right to be censored because I was telling the truth.

Who in there right mind believes this garbage?

All I can say is his 5-volt margin of winning will definitely be reduced in the next election if he chooses to run again.

As a lifelong vermoner I’m disturbed when people filter into our state and want to censor you for being honest.

Is there anyone else here who has to question why no one shows up to vote because we have no one worthy of voting for?

Vermont will be lost until we elect candidates who support our constitutional rights and are willing to defend them.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Arthur my question is are we being sold out at the hands of people who moved into Vermont to bring us to the leftist agenda?

When we defy the writers of the constitution we are no longer viable representation in government.

You are a sell out the people in the state of Vermont when you refuse to uphold our constitutional rights for your own benefit

    This is disgraceful

This is just an example of why people in the state of Vermont do not vote for the republican party..

If you dare call out the republican party for deceiving people who believe in them you are a bad guy..

If you dare call out the republican party for violating the party rules you are a bad guy.

I can’t believe the republican party does not understand why they are losing voters.

I’m a lifelong for minor getting along in my years and I cannot believe that I heard this from someone that filtered into the state of Vermont from out of state and is telling me that he doesn’t care if he violates our constitution as long as he gets his way..

Time for every one of these people to go.

  2. Keep reminding younger working voters about the actions of the democrats. Promised loan forgiveness before the election to buy votes knowing it was illegal. Being pro union until after the election when they stabbed the railroad workers in the back.

  3. Yes, Vermont’s GOP needs ” New Blood ” and fresh minds, as the party is on
life support ………………. Just look at our Governor !!
