McClaughry: ‘Stop telling kids that climate change will destroy their world’

By John McClaughry

Columnist Holman Jenkins of the Wall Street Journal has long been a critic of exaggerated and fictitious claims about the menace of climate change — while at the same time advocating for a global carbon tax to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Michael Bielawski/TNR

Vermont school kids participated in the Global Climate Strike.

A week ago Wednesday he pointed out that “a headline at the liberal site Vox.com invited readers to “stop telling kids that climate change will destroy their world.” The consensus science championed by the IPCC, writer Kelsey Piper points out, does not “add up to an uninhabitable Earth, or even one that’d be an awful place to live. … Because of progress on many fronts in addressing extreme poverty and disease, as well as general economic growth, our kids’ lives will be better than our parents’ lives were” notwithstanding a warming planet.

“The greatest imbecility of all is not drawing the obvious lesson from political failure. Doom-mongering and demonization have not produced rational or effective climate policy. Advocates might claim some progress in producing neurotic reactions in teenage Swedish girls and 60-something New York architects. Most of all, though, they’ve succeeded in convincing millions of voters that climate activism is a bigger threat to their future well-being than climate change is.”

I completely agree. I have said not that “climate change” itself is a scam — climate is always changing — but the frantic campaign to combat it has become a scam. The climate doomsayers need to rethink their message.

  1. Warmmongering is only pertinent until a higher leftist agenda comes along..
Germany will now relight their coal fired hi co2 emitting electric plants so they
can support the potato heads Ukraine policy of not buying Russian oil.. Problem is
Russia will just sell more to China, India, Iran, and who ever else want’s oil.. The
Ruble is about to over run the dollar which biden is destroying. Their economy is
smoking while ours is in the throws of a Rescission.
Their solution EV cars cause more pollution and co2 expenditure then petrol cars
IT”S A SHAM kids For once don’t listen to your leftist elders.

  2. “50 Years of Failed Doomsday, Eco-pocalyptic Predictions; the So-called ‘experts’ Are 0-50”?

save and share this with every liberal you know. It is all Machivellian..They have no logical response (but they’ll try!). NOTHING they “doomsday predict” ever happens :)…all lies for power.

    • Rush Limbaugh happened to enjoy watching the weather and reading about what the weather was going to be and do..he did this over the course of his life he said.
He lived on the coast in FL where storms and weather is a big deal (he told this story).
He noticed that the news had changed in how they were reporting thunder storms..
So being Rush, he did some thinking and instructed his team to do a deep dive.
Rush learned that they were playing with the language to make thunderstorms appear worse than they were all the way back to the early 1900s I think it was..
      It was in newspaper articles..
Then he learned that this was also done by guess who: The Bolsheviks!
(Go do a deep dive on this, fascinating stuff, yeah, history does repeat)

If anyone could dig that show out where he unpacked his findings.. it’s quite interesting and more relevant today than it was when it aired.

So this goes back way further than that great post from snogreen..

  3. Look back at te decades of Liberal created “fears for power”….It all started with the enviro book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson…and post Vietnam. The Left uses all kinds of fear tactics & scapegoats…much is imagined – but enough to scare. Machiavelli knew all about it hundreds of years ago….and what he says is true today – and “Climage Change” is the pinnacle of the “Fear-Fraud = Power” (almost 40 years of it)…

“Machiavelli’s historical observation that “whoever controls the people’s fears becomes master of their souls.” ..The formula for achieving such mastery has not changed in millennia: stoke any fear, turn the fear to hate of whomever and whatever you accuse of standing in the way of safety, and make yourself the agent of that hate. The formula works when its dynamic embeds itself in the masses’ behavior—even when the master himself is the one to be feared. That is because stampeding humans readily give up their souls and become no more mindful of their own interest than steers. Hence, whoever manages to madden crowds, while directing their hysteria (i.e. Climate Change!) onto his enemies, stands to reap power.”

    “…

  4. Scaring them about climate doom fits in nicely with the other crises that we have been shocking and saddening them with over the last few years such as COVID, gender insecurity, social media bullying, school shootings, the high price of housing…The real winners are the psychiatrists and pharmaceutical companies.

  5. What Jim1 said …. Climate is and always will change but CO2 is not the boogeyman.
“ The atmosphere, mainly due to the beneficial characteristics and impact of H2O absorption spectra, proves to be a highly stable moderator of global temperatures. There is no impending climate emergency and CO2 is not the control parameter of global temperatures, that accolade falls to H2O. CO2 is simply the supporter of life on this planet as a result of the miracle of photosynthesis.”

  6. The theory of catastrophic CO2 warming isn’t a scam, but instead it’s an example of groupthink and misguided physics gone wild.

It seems to be turning out that not only is CO2 warming misguided physics, but the entire theory of greenhouse gases as keeping our planet habitable is confused and inaccurate physics.

When we consider the lapse rate equations for the dry and wet lapse rates, the terms for these have to do with gravitational acceleration, the heat of vaporization of water, the universal gas constant, etc., but there is no term at all for radiative effects. And yet the lapse rates describe how air cools at it ascends and warms as it descends through a pressure gradient: our atmosphere. Further, even though the dry lapse rate is a simple formula (compared with the wet lapse rate) with no radiative inputs, even air with moisture in it– that is, with a radiatively active greenhouse gas, H20– up to the dew point when the wet lapse rate equation leads to a slower rate of cooling with height, the water vapor in the air doesn’t change the dry lapse rate formula, meaning there’s no infrared ‘murkiness’ added that slows the rate of cooling. When the wet lapse rate kicks in, this is because of the latent heat of vaporization, not because of any radiative elements.

There are many oddities in the theory of catastrophic warming. A much simpler explanation for our ‘greenhouse’ is that atmospheric pressure itself warms the atmosphere, as indeed the lapse rate equations tell us. To understand how much air pressure is pushing down on us at the surface, we need only consider that atmospheric pressure can crush a railroad tanker car with a near vacuum in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz95_VvTxZM And the lapse rate indeed tells us: more pressure means more heat because more pressure causes the molecules within a gas to move faster. The bottom of the Grand Canyon isn’t hot because of the radiative effects of the lapse rate (there are no radiative inputs!) It’s hot because of the added pressure and according to the formulas for the lapse rate, which are driven by gravitational acceleration.

Radiative effects exist within a pressure continuum. They don’t drive that continuum, and they don’t cause the surface to warm.

Catastrophic warming by CO2 cannot happen, and is not happening.

    Jim1
