McClaughry: Rep. George Till, sales tax on services champion

By John McClaughry

A few days ago I received a copy of an email to a constituent from Rep. George Till, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. The committee is apparently discussing which if any of the recommendations of the Vermont Tax Structure Commission to enact.

Rep. George Till, D-Jericho

One of that commission’s recommendations is to broaden the sales tax base by applying the tax rate to services other than health care. That, the commission says, would allow the sales tax rate to drop from the present 6 percent to down around 4 percent.

In his May 4 email, Rep. Till, D-Jericho, writes: “The whole point of this proposal [to broaden the base of the sales tax] is to lower the rate of the completely regressive sales tax by expanding sales tax to things like portfolio management, investment advice, tax preparation services, things that average Vermonters don’t use.”

I think Rep. Till would be startled to learn that quite a few of his average constituents use tax preparation services and investment advice, and almost all of them use plumbers, electricians, lawn mowers, auto mechanics, driveway plowers, computer techies, tailors, accountants, taxi drivers, lawyers, tutors, music teachers, delivery drivers, loggers, excavators , barbers, cosmetologists, manicurists, day care operators, babysitters, gravediggers, and as many as 140 more service occupations.

If you’re ready to pay taxes on those services, Rep. George Till is your voice in Montpelier.

  1. Which is why I use so very very few services of any kind in Vermont. My auto mechanic I cannot live without but I choose no one else here cause most Vermonters vote these cucks into office and I do not vote that way. 70% of current Vermonters vote this way. I have no voice here in liberal Lala land. But I will continue to vote until I move away from this socialist hellhole.

  2. I have a novel idea for Mr. Tax and Spend Till we’re empty….

How about you cut useless gooberment programs with little value so we don’t need
so much tax money to support. It’s not a “not enough” money problem it’s a spending problem that’s the virus in Montpeculiar

Lets strive to be more “Tax prudent” like NH whose in the single digit bracket instead of the high 40’s were our leftist gov has put us..

  3. They are increasing taxes, it is not a reduction.

Total taxes collected are going up in this proposal.

They are doing a very clever smoke and mirrors, the mafia are envious.

Then a couple years later when people forget, they’ll raise the sale tax because it’s so much lower than other states.

We have Con artists, not representatives.

  4. Who elects these genuine dummies into office they think they pull the wall down over the taxpayer’s eyes.

About time for them to talk about tax reduction get people off welfare and get them to work

We can’t have only a few taxpayers in the state supporting the rest of the bums that won’t go to work

Time to get rid of the socialist Governor Phil Scott and the rest of the progressives that are destroying our state
