House Republicans are introducing a resolution that denounces Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for repeatedly expressing laudatory comments about the Castro regime.
GOP lawmakers are expected to introduce a resolution on the House floor on Thursday that not only condemns a number of heinous initiatives undertaken under the Castro regime, but also condemns Sanders for “disregarding” a history of human rights abuses by the Communist government. The move is the latest response after Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, has refused to fully denounce Fidel Castro’s autocratic rule of the island.

The resolution responds to Sanders’s praise of Castro’s “massive literacy program” by stating that “the objective of the Castro regime’s literacy and education policies was to promote loyalty and reverence for Fidel Castro above all else” and that “Fidel Castro and the Communist Party of Cuba blocked access to independent sources of information and imposed outright censorship of books, libraries, and educational sources.”
Castro held as many as 60,000 political prisoners, and the now-deceased dictator ordered an estimated 17,000 to be killed, according to the resolution.
The resolution is being introduced by Florida GOP Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, who represents a district in the state that has 335,000 residents of Cuban descent — about half his entire constituency.
Sanders, on several occasions, has refrained from fully condemning the Castro regime.
During a “60 Minutes” interview that aired Sunday, Sanders said it was “unfair” to say everything about the Castro regime was bad, noting how Castro launched a “massive literacy program” upon assuming power. The next day, during a town hall event in South Carolina, he stood by his remarks. During Tuesday night’s presidential debate, Sanders again touted Cuba’s progress on education.
While the comments have garnered universal condemnation from the Republican Party, Sanders has also attracted widespread criticism from Democrats, many of whom represent districts with heavy Cuban-American populations.
Florida Democratic Reps. Donna Shalala and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, and other Democrats in the state, issued scathing public statements against the Vermont lawmaker. Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa encouraged Sanders to visit Florida and speak to residents who experienced life under Castro.
Sanders has won the popular vote in all three of the states — Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada — that have taken part in Democratic presidential contests so far, making him the undisputed frontrunner at the moment.

I find it beneficial to be enlightened on Bernie’s ideals of governing. Cubans were dying to get away from Castro – and far too many of them did. Die, that is. The summer of 1960 was the last time I saw Havana, a once thriving and vibrant city. Castro destroyed Cuba. Some favor lifting the embargo; They forget that Castro nationalized properties and businesses belonging both to Cubans and Americans that sustained Cuba’s strong economy. That has not been repaid. By some estimates, his government took over six billion dollars and ground it into dirt, dust and death. And Bernie holds him as a model. Go to Hell, Bernie. Or better still, Venezuela. There are millions of Cubans, still Cuban in spirit, living in the United States in whom the bitterness has not died. Revue Castro’s promises that brought Cubans to support hm; revue what became of those promises once he gained power. Do not elect a Socialist. They are liars, they are corrupt, they are fanatic controllers. They are Orwell’s swine and I both fear and hate them. They destroy nations.
I eagerly await the FL primaries. Will Kamerade Sanders even show up?
Why bother. Give the guy all the rope he wants.
Sanders is dangerous with all his “free stuff” supporters. Should he gain the nomination, there may not be sufficient sane Democrats to either not vote for him or to not vote Party. DJT has shown he has tremendous support but don’t rule out Demodirty tricks at the polls. This will definitely be an election to scrutinize.
