Deb Billado: Biden crisis unforgivable

Editor’s note: This commentary is by Deb Billado, chairwoman of the Vermont GOP.

Here are some promises from Joe Biden on Afghanistan. Can you guess which one he didn’t keep?

“We will not conduct a hasty rush to the exit. We’ll do it responsibly, deliberately, and safely.” — April, 2021

Deborah Billado, chair of the Vermont GOP

“The likelihood there’s going to be the Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely.” — July, 2021

“There’s going to be no circumstance where you see people being lifted off the roof of an embassy…in Afghanistan.” — July, 2021

“If there are American citizens left, we’re going to stay until we get them all out.” — August, 2021

Answer: all of the above.

From abandoning our 20-year-long mission, to ignoring our humanitarian obligations, to watching civilians die after falling from our planes, Joe Biden is directly responsible for a crisis that can only be summarized as unforgivable.

Perhaps even worse is his attempts to spin the crisis as a foreign policy achievement, or deliberately lie to the American people. Even the Associated Press fact checkers noted Biden “skirts [his] broken promise” on Afghanistan.

In addition to the American citizens, green card holders, visa holders, and more that we left behind, we have turned our shoulder to the people of Afghanistan who are now faced with the impossible reality of darkness and violence imposed by a ruthless gang of terrorists that tortured their lives before our presence in the region — and now will do so again.

But just as bad as the policy failures have been the lies. The refusal to answer questions. The complete unwillingness to accept any responsibility and own up to any mistakes. If our President can’t take accountability for his actions, then who will?

It’s no surprise his approval rating has plummeted (and is now at just 36% among Independents). Sadly, if the Biden administration placed as much effort on controlling the situation on-the-ground as they have trying to control the political fallout, we would have never been in this position.

Biden bows his head in frustration at his press conferences. Instead, he should be sinking in his chair in shame in front of every democratic world leader, who we cannot reasonably look into the eye of with an ounce of integrity anymore.

  1. When will the spineless cowards in this State demand an election audit and stop pretending to represent or even care about fellow citizens? We obviously have no law, no order and no represenation.

  2. Deb, this was the design, the plan.
They do darn near most everything in a way that it will surely fail, because that then creates more opportunity for them. This is no different.
Look at who you are, you supported Trump, and look at how you feel now.
    Mission accomplished.
    These people hate America..
I have said many times: “Do not vote for people that think Failure is a success.”

    • Current regime a wrecking crew to destroy our nation, each one us, way of life criminilize patriotism and replace us with ppl who hate us and nation as much as they do. Not missed is the the terrorists imported to our nation to attack us and tgake our nation by force thru sleepers and newest arrivals.

  3. This is a good reminder of what many already knew. What we need to remember- and pass on to our friends and neighbors that are voters or can vote is the fact that Leahy, Sanders and Welch all support biden and in fact are in lockstep agreement with the policies of sleepy joe. Leahy, with his supposed leadership role in the senate seems just as complicit as biden for what is happening in Afghanistan, as well as our southern border. Leahy and Sanders care little about bankrupting the US and it’s citizens with tax and regulation. November 2022 seems a long way off and the carnage biden and the Congress inflict on all of us will continue- but barring more election manipulations- we can change political leadership in but 14 months.

    • It will be very difficult to replace the three stooges since the Democrats have changed the election laws to make it very easy to stuff the ballot boxes and allow nonresidents to vote. Republicans need very strong candidates who are moderate conservatives and get the people out to vote for them.
