Vermont House passes another budget bill on to Senate

A budget bill similar to what has already fallen once to Gov. Phil Scott’s veto pen has been passed again out of the House, by an 80-to-43 count, and is headed to the Senate chamber to be taken up on Thursday afternoon.

Statehouse Headliners: Gov. Scott’s 10 vetoes this year show commitment to jobs, low taxes

In this week’s Statehouse Headliners, Gov. Phil Scott has vetoed 10 bills. None of these vetoes have been overridden, an act that requires a two-thirds majority of the Legislature. Ten vetoes in a single year is an extraordinarily high number. Only two governors have ever had more for their entire careers.

Agency of Education releases Act 46 merger proposals for stalled districts

The Agency of Education has recommended 18 consolidations for school districts that haven’t yet merged in accordance with Act 46. But of 43 districts or groups of districts that filed “Section 9” proposals for alternative governance structures, 22 shouldn’t have to merge, according to a report released Friday.

Electric rates going up again, and grid constraints and green energy are culprits

Washington Electric Co-op has announced that electric rates will rise this year at 3.72 percent if the Public Utility Commission approves its request. Like other Vermont utility rate hikes in recent years, the main culprits include grid upgrades, curtailment of large energy projects and the spread of net metering projects.

Sanders votes against VA health care bill as America honors fallen veterans

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., former chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, has voted against a $52 billion reform bill for veterans’ health care that gives desperate patients increased access to private doctors and private hospitals.
