National Assessment of Educational Progress releases 2022 results — Vermont’s performance declines again

Students showed a decline in average scale scores compared to Vermont’s 2019 results. While it is fair to conclude that the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are reflected in student performance, that explanation does not tell the whole story. Vermont students’ performance on NAEP has been generally declining for over a decade.

DEC: Changes to Vermont hazardous waste regulations

The VHWMR regulates the handling, use, reuse, and recycling of hazardous waste in Vermont. Hazardous waste has chemicals or properties — such as ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity — that can harm public health or the environment.

DEC: Stormwater permit threshold enacted in 2019 took effect in July 2022

“Stormwater runoff not only erodes our soils but also carries sediment, phosphorus, and other pollutants into our waterways,” said DEC Commissioner John Beling. “Issuing this permit is a key part of the Vermont Clean Water Act of 2015. Vermont needs to reduce stormwater runoff from commercial, industrial, residential, and institutional properties to meet clean water goals.”

Vermont Parent Representation Center releases report on DCF approach to abusive parents

The report follows a three-year case study of the processes and outcomes on the Vermont Department for Children and Families’ (DCF) substation process, which determines whether or not to place a person on the Child Protection Registry for child abuse or neglect.

VTGOP asks Sen. MacDonald to respond to theft of Klar signs

“John Klar provided video evidence that Mark MacDonald was in possession of Klar’s yard signs. Since Klar did not give a yard sign to MacDonald, the sign in MacDonald’s yard must have been stolen either by MacDonald himself, or by someone else and then given to MacDonald.”

DEC: Fuel delivery business fined $9K for tank inspection violations

In a separate incident in 2020, while inspecting an AST system in Waterbury, the company failed to affix a red tag to an AST system that did not meet the inspection standards in the AST Rules. Fuel deliveries continued.

Vermonters can make extra cash by removing their junk cars. In 2015, the State of Vermont created the Salvage Yard Rule to protect human health and the environment by ensuring the safe, proper, and sustainable operation of salvage yards.
