John Klar: When populism and socialism marry

The lesson of history teaches that fascism has more often risen from the far left, twinned with populist anger and fear. Whatever the evidence may be of far-right conspiracies in Germany, the narrative being shaped against conservative and Christian Americans is disturbing.

McClaughry: A constitutional right under attack

A movement is afoot to repeal a 1988 Vermont law called the Sportsmens’ Bill of Rights. That law prohibits local governments from enacting their own gun control ordinances.

Bernie: Quality journalism not possible without a living wage, and when corporations prioritize profit

One reason we do not have enough real journalism in America right now is because far too many media outlets are led primarily by the pursuit of profit as opposed to investing in the workers and resources it takes to educate the people of this country and hold the powerful accountable.

Vermont Chamber details legislative priorities for upcoming session

Record-high spending in recent years has been possible due to the influx of federal funding for pandemic relief. As that federal funding is depleted, the ability of Vermonters to absorb the cost of sustained programs will be central to our work.

Left melting down over election case about to be heard by Supreme Court

All the way back in 1787, the Framers had the foresight to give the power to write the rules of federal elections to lawmakers — not courts — and that’s driving today’s litigious left crazy.

Paul Dame: Democrats likely to target school choice in upcoming session

Democrats are constantly trying to infringe on certain rights entirely, or at the very least limit the choices we have to exercise them. In the session ahead we can likely expect an attack on school choice.

Ted Ropple: What a week for COVID vaccines and the war in Ukraine

The efficacy of the vaccines is poor at best. The safety records of these mRNA concoctions have been suppressed by our government officials, the drug manufacturers and the so-called media that is supposed to hold the people in charge to account. They cause much more harm than we’ve been told.

Tom Evslin: It’s the subsidence (not the rising seas)

It’s politically popular to attribute all disasters to climate change. Ignoring other natural and man-made causes of catastrophe — like subsidence — makes it impossible to take effective avoidance and mitigation measures.

Thayer: Time for Vermonters to pay closer attention

In the end, I firmly believe that if we pay more attention to our voting choices, Vermont will be a better place with a more perfect union.

Flemming: A third of climate proposals unscientific, unaffordable

Why on earth would the Legislature seriously consider such CO2 reduction proposals if the Energy Futures Group model shows they will be terrible investments? Certainly not the loosest pretense of scientific merit. Rather, because Vermont’s Global Warming Solutions Act of 2020 says so.

John Klar: Another look at Vermont’s ‘Essential Topics in Sexual Health Education’

Vermont’s education system teaches children about sex from an early age: pre-kindergarten. Most parents are unaware of what their children are being taught. One example is the teaching about abstinence.

Paul Dame: Trust, but verify, election recounts

While things like voter ID might be out of our reach until we have a Republican majority, cleaning up excess ballots is one small thing that existing state statute has a process for and it’s something we can work on now.
