Roper: Refocusing on Vermont after the national election

The rest of the nation is demonstrating that tax cuts and the removal of costly regulations lead to economic growth and prosperity. Vermont, however, is proving that high taxes and onerous regulations lead to economic stagnation, outmigration and increased poverty.

McClaughry: That really scary climate report

The report, relying on passive constructions such as “is projected to be,” seems to collect all of the contentions made by climate alarmists over the past 30 years and announce them again with a redoubled sense of urgency.

Opinion: Answering Bernie Sanders’ confusion on human rights

Our aim should be that our government equally protects all people, which is in keeping with our national creed “that all men are created equal.” Let that be the goal we strive for, rather than Sanders’ low view of humanity.

Roper: France riots over a carbon tax

The source of citizen ire is primarily a fuel tax on gasoline and diesel fuel amounting to 3.9 euro cents per liter on the former and 7 cents on the latter. Another increase of 2.9 cents 6.5 cents respectively is set for January.

McClaughry: Dealing with pre-existing conditions

During the last national election campaign Democrats scored points by attacking Republicans for wanting to deny health insurance to people with pre-existing conditions. The Republicans couldn’t muster a good answer, even though they had one readily available.

Keelan: When it comes to nonprofit fundraising, how much is too much?

Giving to tax-exempt organizations has come a long way since Congress adopted the Revenue Act of 1918 and, in 1954, Section 501(c)3 of the Tax Code. I can only imagine that they had no idea of how America’s “charities” would grow to the industry it is today.

Flemming: Do vasectomies prevent dictators?

The birth of children, especially in a state with some of the lowest birth rates in the nation, is something to be celebrated, not reviled. Vasectomies are a personal choice, and not something we should guilt fertile men into getting.

Opinion: Why free-market policies are key to empowering women

What many don’t realize is that women’s advancement doesn’t require gender quotas or affirmative action. What’s needed, above all, is free market policies that allow women to make their own choices.

McClaughry: Legislative preview for 2019

With unrestrained legislative power in their hands, all of the issues that excite the liberal imagination will compete for a high rank on the “must pass” list.

Opinion: I agree with Ocasio-Cortez on something — tax subsidies for select corporations are wrong

Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was right when she tweeted that the idea that Amazon would receive millions of dollars in targeted tax subsidies “is extremely concerning to residents here.”
