Bucknam: A constitutional amendment for Vermont’s kids

Lawmakers should pass in the next legislative session a proposal for a Vermont Constitutional Amendment patterned after the abortion rights amendment giving parents the liberty to choose the appropriate education for their children.

Roper: Hey Hollywood, put your money where your mouth is

Our Legislature just passed what has been described as the most radical pro-abortion legislation in the nation. If pro-life legislation is a motivating factor in leaving someplace, shouldn’t pro-abortion legislation be a factor in moving to someplace if your goal is to make a political point?

McClaughry: Sanders and Denmark

Bernie Sanders is fond of explaining socialism by pointing not to Nicaragua or Cuba or Venezuela but to Scandinavia, especially Denmark.

Supreme Court rejects case on transgender bathrooms. Here’s why it’s still a huge issue.

“I don’t want a man in the bathroom with me. I’m already uncomfortable in my body, trying to grow up,” said Lightcap.  “I have a thirteen-year-old sister who goes to this school. I don’t want her going into a bathroom where a male is allowed to just walk in there.”

Frenier: Tolerance and the transgender debate

For a lot of parents today, the LGBTQ curriculum advocacy in public schools is a kind of establishment that discriminates against their beliefs and labels them as bigots if they object.

Moore: A review of some of the major legislative issues this past session

We are a member of a coalition of pro-business, pro-growth organizations that have been voicing our concerns during the session. Collectively, we represented our constituencies’ positions on a number of bills that were in-play at the legislature. So how did we do?

Why conservatives should take heart despite socialist upsurge

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., arguably has done more than any other living American to market socialism to the next generation. And with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., following closely in his wake, rest assured we’ll be contending with socialism for years to come.

McClaughry: A Legislative wrap-up for 2019

The 2019 legislative session is now history, and it’s worth taking stock of its accomplishments, both positive and negative.

Roper: Would you let a class of college freshmen invest your life savings?

Nobody in their right mind would allow even the brightest bunch of freshmen business majors or biology majors from UVM or St. Mikes to, after one semester of study, design and implement a statewide health care system. Yet something like that is what happens in Montpelier every year.

Letters to legislators: Humanistic metaphysical thinking behind abortion bill

An ideology that denies natural law’s order of nature is an ideology that can then deny this amendment to Vermont’s H.57 abortion bill: “The State of Vermont recognizes that a viable human fetus is a person under Vermont law.”

Neil Johnson: On framing Romney, Billado, Sanders and the election

We had better start framing the conversations — framing the questions and framing the debate — or we will lose to the propagandists.

Flemming: 4,800 Vermont workers face mandatory registration and fees

By imposing a certification process with an added fee, Vermont will in effect be discouraging recent graduates from considering becoming residential contractors. Or perhaps, these graduates might choose to take their talents outside Vermont.
