Vermont Secretary of State's Office

John Klar: Attorney general demands $7K to release state correspondence with Planned Parenthood

The rationale employed by Mr. Donovan for charging fees for record requests is that “[m]ost of the requests for records possessed by the Attorney General’s Office are from private law firms and companies.”

U.S. House of Representatives

Bucknam: Now is the time, Congressman Welch

If Congressman Welch claims to take up the mantle of Sen. Flanders, then he must stand in the well of the House, and condemn his Democrat colleague, Rep. Schiff, for Schiff’s repeated false statements about the FISA process, Carter Page, and Republican Devin Nunes.

McClaughry: New food stamp work requirements ought to win widespread support

Most people don’t begrudge government assistance for the sick and disabled, the elderly, or single parents with kids. But most people who work expect that able-bodied adults, not disabled or elderly, need to quit loafing and start working.

Students’ test scores unchanged after decades of federal intervention in education

Federal government efforts to improve education have been dismal. Even if there were a constitutional basis for its involvement, the federal government is simply ill-positioned to determine what education policies will best serve the diverse local communities across our vast nation.

Letter: There are no safe spaces in the real world

If the youth is taught to hate our past, disparage man for destroying the planet, and blame someone else for their predicament, how will they ever cope in life?

John Klar: Vermont’s fire and brimstone carbon tax

The latest and greatest sin is the fire-and-brimstone evil of scorching the Earth via our collective consumption, for which will be imposed a regressive, ineffective, inefficient tax. It is called “the carbon tax.”

Roper: Blitterdorf train scheme comes off tracks

If it costs nearly $100 million just to upgrade eight miles of track, what do you think it will cost to build up passenger rail infrastructure to the point where it is actually convenient and useful enough for a critical mass of people to realistically give up driving cars?

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders

Opinion: The truth about the new food stamp work requirements’ effects

Under the rule, some able-bodied adults without dependents who have received aid for more than three months would be required to take a job; if a job is not immediately available, recipients would be required to undertake training, perform community service work or at least look for a job.

Deb Billado: The decommissioning of Democrat-created big government commissions

The Legislature has created a new board to be known as the Sunset Advisory Board to evaluate the other boards and to make recommendations regarding their continuation. We can always hope that they will do the right thing for Vermonters and will recommend decommissioning the unneeded boards.

Keelan: The climate ‘crisis’ and common sense

Is it at all possible to just step back and see the climate crisis with some perspective? Yes, there are serious climate issues impacting the world’s geography — in cities, oceans and air. Here in Vermont we are not in a crisis situation — far from it.

McClaughry: China to cancel out all Vermont CO2 emissions

Vermont’s carbon dioxide emissions from all sources are about 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. Just one 1600 Mw Chinese coal plant would produce about as much CO2 in a year as all CO2 emissions in Vermont.

Opinion: Scrap energy tax favors for better reform

It’s that time of year again when Congress provokes the issue of expired or soon-to-expire energy tax credits. Tax credits and other such subsidies distort markets and grossly misinform renewable energy companies about actual customer demand.
