Charles Eugene Cartier Jr., of New Hampshire, just pled guilty to double voting in the 2016 general election, voting first in New Hampshire then again in neighboring Massachusetts. He was the fourth person found guilty of duplicate voting in New Hampshire just in the last year.
Now that Daily Kos has been mugged by the government, maybe their experience will inspire some empathy with other employers and employees victimized by “arbitrary,” “unfeasible,” “nonsensical” laws coming out of governments ostensibly to protect us from ourselves.
If someone were to ask you today what the Vermont Department of Health’s current position is on legal sales of marijuana, I venture many would say it has changed from opposition in the past to support today. I am happy to report that the department’s opposition to S.54 has not changed.
The Global Warming Solutions Act would simply bestow on state bureaucrats the power to force Vermonters to submit to an endless list of expensive and invasive rules to comply with arbitrary emissions goals, and eliminate any shred of our elected representatives’ accountability for those actions.
I look for improvement as a result of the next election but the corrective action, even if it was applied today, would take a generation or two to really manifest to a point of being significantly noticeable. Time to clean house corner to corner, and wall to wall, and at 109 State St., Montpelier.
Religious liberty is under assault in many ways. People of faith are mocked for their religious conscience and government sees religious values as obstacles to overcome rather than a value to cherish and protect.
Debate over the Global Warming Solutions Act in the House Energy and Technology Committee grew philosophical about whether or not democracy is an appropriate form of government for dealing with climate change.
Laws only work if they codify cultural practices that have widespread acceptance. We are nowhere near that in our society, and the legislature’s all-or-nothing approach to abortion is only driving our citizens apart.
In 2020, Vermonters must exterminate flour beetle legislators at the polls. Voters wish to retain sufficient flour for their own larders, against the day that is imminent — the day the national economy declines and the Legislature finally peers into its own empty bag of tricks.
Rep. Scheuermann’s statement should give even the most ardent climate warrior pause. If the Legislature passes GWSA, any “intent” may, or may not, be followed. We would be effectively handing control over any section of the economy that produces CO2 emissions to an unelected group of bureaucrats.
Vermonters are more than willing to roll up our sleeves and work together on climate solutions that are sensible, affordable and that can be measured locally in the short term for accountability. But joining TCI would hobble us.
If TCI burns to the ground, our Legislature is going to feel pressure to “do something” they can spin as a positive step to solve climate change. And that “something” is likely to be the Global Warming Solutions Act.
