The day GWSA stood for ‘God wants solar arrays’

Rev. Carl Van Osdall then reminded them that this Legislature often must vote on protecting nature. And then, in case anyone had failed to connect the dots, he reminded them, “and today, you are voting on the Global Warming Solutions Act.”

Roper: Amendment would eliminate private ownership of real estate

What is a “right to a clean environment”? Does that mean I am entitled to taxpayer funded trash pick up? A court will decide, I guess, cuz I’ll bring that suit myself. Does it mean I can sue my neighbor for grilling out on his back yard barbecue?

John de Bruin: Voting in Vermont is a politically biased nightmare

As we stand on the threshold of the 2020 election cycle, we have another opportunity for change. Shall we make or break the state this time?

Opinion: Trump’s war on sanctuary cities is about more than politics

It’s about to get real for America’s sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. The Trump administration is deploying 100 tactical Border Patrol officers to help ICE officials take illegal immigrants in those cities into custody.

Opinion: Legislature may be genital mutilation, but would law violate Prop 5 ‘reproductive autonomy’?

Keelan: The 75th anniversary of the landing on Iwo Jima

Rosenthal said it best — he took the photo, but the Marines took Iwo Jima. When you are with Gedeon LaCroix and listen to his story, it is a most humbling experience.

Flemming: Vermont needs school choice to fight racism

We should put parents and children in the driver’s seat of their education and allow them to find the schools that they judge to be most amenable to each specific child’s education. School choice can be used to fight racism in Vermont schools.

Noncompliance with new gun laws follows historical precedent

Noncompliance with federal laws mandating the return of escaped slaves was rampant throughout northern states. In 1850, the Vermont Legislature went so far as to pass a law effectively requiring state judicial and law enforcement officers to act in direct opposition to the federal Fugitive Slave Law.

Lawmakers in 9 states move to protect children from LGBT ‘transition’ agenda

In the past couple of months, Republican lawmakers in at least nine states have introduced legislation to ban medical providers from helping boys and girls undergo a medical transition via surgery and/or hormone replacement therapy before they turn 18.

On Presidents Day, remembering why we have a strong commander in chief

While we are celebrating Washington, who led an eight-year fight for our liberty, and Lincoln, who fought to stop the breakup of the Union, we also should be thankful for other presidents who used the strong power of the executive to protect the nation.

John Klar: Way to reverse downward spiral is to reduce size of Vermont’s government

Fewer regulations and related expenses for businesses will improve incomes, decrease housing expenses, encourage investment and instill hope. This will reduce suicides, domestic violence and illicit drug use.
