Bernie Sanders will take a ‘hard look’ at running for president if Biden doesn’t, adviser says

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont will consider running for president for a third time in 2024 should President Joe Biden decline to run, according to an adviser on Thursday.

“I assume that he would give it a hard look … I don’t want to make the judgment for him. Obviously, it would be his choice to make. But I assume that he would want to reevaluate it,” said Faiz Shakir, one of Sanders’ political advisers, on CBS News.

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

Sanders, a self-described “democratic socialist” who is the standard bearer of several progressive policy propositions – such as a “Medicare for all” publicly funded healthcare system and tuition-free public universities  – would be 83 on Election Day in 2024.

Sanders became a national political figure in 2016 with his left-wing primary challenge to Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. Despite his old age, he attracted the support of many young people and working-class voters, with a record number of small-dollar donations, for the consistency of his progressive and pro-union policies.

His loss to Clinton was met with acrimony from progressives following the hacking of the Democratic National Committee in 2016, where Russian-linked hackers obtained nearly 20,000 internal emails that were later published on WikiLeaks. The emails showed that top DNC officials discussed ways to undermine Sanders, believing that his socialist message would hurt the party electorally.

Sanders ran for president again in 2020 and emerged as the initial frontrunner in the Democratic primary, but failed to undercut Biden‘s momentum following the South Carolina primary. After Biden’s election, Sanders openly lobbied Bidento appoint him as the Secretary of Labor, but was not chosen.

Despite Sanders’ losses, many of his policy ideas have become mainstream Democratic Party positions, while he still enjoys significant support among Democrats. A poll in August showed that Sanders had the highest favorability ratingwith Democrats among any 2024 presidential candidate, including Biden, at 46%.

The latest 2024 polling, however, shows Sanders trailing other candidates such as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Vice President Kamala Harris. Some remain worried that his left-wing message will dismay independent and moderate voters, granting an advantage to the GOP.

“Elections are won in the suburbs, which are not a hotbed of revolutionary tendencies,” wrote James Pindell for the Boston Globe in a 2020 editorial, adding that “Republicans would have had a field day.”

Sanders did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  1. Interestingly, bernie still thinks he’s relevant.
With the highly suspect election results of 2020 and 2022, does bernie really believe the donor class would allow him to win? He was and continues to be a useful pawn for the democrat party. Is he really off his rocker- or being paid to run? Likely he will run to enhance his campaign funds, make himself feel relevant…and wealthy. Nothing like spending other people’s money- be it campaign funds or tax dollars.

    • He’ll come out richer. He had a little house, where his family ran the advertising agency that contracted everything for his ads. What is that 10% for all the placements? How many hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on media?

10% for this big guy too.

Ran as an LLC, then the members changed….nice cover up….

      Let’s not be fooled again.

    • Some of us are trying to get rid of him…..perhaps he can crash and burn, and be of no influence to state and country…..

  2. True story. Years ago I was at a Chamber gathering, mostly all Repub business folks. Converstation turned to Bernie & his policies.. Fellow told me that many, in the room, REPUBS, were always DONATING to Bernie’s congressional campaigns… I asked…”Why on earth do that?”…His reply …..”A lot of Repubs donate to Bernie’s campaigns to make sure he is elected & stays in Washington…because if Bernie loses a congress election, he will come back to VT and then run for Govenor – and REALLY destroy us, business, and Vermont.”

The Chamber folks thought Bernie would get little power in DC, but he ended up running for President…but I doubt he’ll do it again now…he talks of it just to feed his ego and keep his progressive power base in teh face of the Dem powers that be….that he must be paid attention to – or else.

    • That is the same reasoning for sending Becca Balint to DC…to be RID OF HER. There she is just Peter Welch with a pantsuit. In Vermont, she would cause a lot more trouble.

  3. We have felt the burn of the Bern. The inauguration mittens episode was truly the end as it was a showcase exposing him for what he really is and represents. This announcement is irrevelent and shows desperation and one last go at the the white hot spolight that is dimming upon them all.

  4. I hope the supply chain of Depends for old folks is not interrupted in DC. There’s more geriatric customers there than most places. For DC politicians, 90 is the new 70. Notice how Diane Feinstien has kind of disappeared lately from public view, she’s in her 90s. The dims keep her around to vote even though she has no idea what she’s voting for, but if it’s a dim bill she’s okay with it. Now back to Bernard from Brooklyn. It’s a good thing he got into politics because in his former life he would of had to been on welfare to buy his depend now. Imagine Bernie running the United States of America? If that doesn’t make you cry, what will. Upon taking office at 83 years old, he would be in Diane’s territory after 4 years at 87. Joseph Robinette Biden just turned 80 in November and he forgot his depends while on a trip overseas. Unfortunately, he had an accident while in public but he immediately called for an investigation to find out who soiled his pants.

  5. I guess Bernie feels after losing two ” Pillow ” fights already, running for POTUS again
    is a good idea, what an ” arrogant ass ” Vermont’s so-called ” Independent “, come on
we all know he’s a socialist/communist but thinks he can run again as a” Democrat “,
    and beat ” Feckless Joe ” ??

They’ll the ” DNC” never let him in their clubhouse, but this fool will run again and then
lose ” again “, for the same reason………….

This looser will then convince his followers to vote for whomever the DNC digs up to
run, as it won’t be ” Senile Joe “, or Socialist Sanders….. but it would be fun to watch
these two fools clash, both are babbling idiots.

Hey Bernie, maybe you’ll get another house out of the deal, maybe you’re not as stupid
    as you appear to be.

    • He does make a ton of money for himself and the family with each run, doesn’t matter if he wins or loses, he’ll make hundreds of millions of dollars this time.

  6. This dude couldn’t even keep a job at a hippie commune.OH, and BTW his writing topics are nothing to write home to mama about. Bernie, Bernie, go back to the home Hillary bought you.

  7. Is there anyone under 75 qualified to run for POTUS? This looks to me like an ominous sign that younger (at least in their 50’s) people are voided. It’s really not a good sign. And I don’t care if they played around on the side. Nor do I give a hoot if they may have used a derogatory expression umpteen years ago at a party. Don’t care if they’re black, white, gay, straight, man, woman, handicapped. I just want them competent and knowledgeable on constitutional law and just what the duties of the POTUS is and carry the duty it out.
