64% of federal arrests in 2018 were of non-citizens, DOJ finds

By Jason Hopkins

Federal arrests of non-citizens has increased exponentially over the past two decades, and account for the majority of all federal arrests, data released by the Justice Department revealed.

Non-citizens made up 64% of all federal arrests in 2018 despite making up 7% of the U.S. population, according to Justice Department data released Thursday and reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Between 1998 and 2018, federal arrests of non-citizens grew by 234%, while federal arrest of U.S. citizens climbed 10%.

While the numbers provide credence to the President Donald Trump’s argument that illegal immigration results in increased crime, immigration experts also pointed out that migrant apprehensions make up a significant portion of current federal arrests.

“Experience has taught the immigration agencies and DOJ that this works to reduce recidivism — in other words, when illegal crossers face some more severe consequence than just being sent back home, they don’t keep doing it,” Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies told the Washington Examiner.

Trump made increased immigration enforcement a hallmark goal of his administration. His efforts at beefing up border security and providing additional funding to the Customs and Border Protection have yielded satisfactory results. Federal immigration apprehension climbed more than 50,000 from 2017 to 2018, according to the Justice Department data.

Ninety-five percent of the increase in federal arrests over the past 20 years were, in fact, due to immigration offenses, the Justice Department data found. Non-citizens accounted for 28% of all federal fraud arrests, 25% of all federal property arrests, and 24% of all federal drug arrests. The Justice Department identified the top five crimes non-citizens were most likely be prosecuted for: illegal re-entry, drugs, fraud, alien smuggling and misuse of visas.

“Opponents of immigration enforcement are obsessed with trying to establish that illegal aliens and legal immigrants commit fewer crimes than Americans, and so, as their narrative goes, local law enforcement agencies should not cooperate with ICE and should adopt sanctuary policies,” Vaughan continued in her statement. “This is first of all not true, but is off-point and a dangerous conclusion.”

  1. Oh this must be a mistake because we’ve been assured by AOC and all the other leftardocrats that illegals are more law abiding and better citizens then US Citizens… they wouldn’t ever lie to us…would they??
Maybe they could pass some more laws, making being white somehow against the law, to even out the stats..

The real number would be considerably higher but sanctuary cities protect their illegal rapist and thug criminals from getting arrested by the feds, i’d imagine with those it maybe closer to 82%… but when your a criminal right off the
bat it’s little consequence to go further in criminal activity.

  2. Not to worry, the boarder is secure, there are no problems, Trump is trying to fool us with this “crisis” nonsense. If so, I’m puzzeled. How can it be that if 64% of Federal arrests come from a 7% segment of the population, all this histeria about the border is a sham???? WAKE UP all, there is trouble in River City and something needs to be done. All this sanctuary stupidity has got to be stopped!!!

  3. Great – now we bill their country of origin for all the costs associated with their arrest , incarceration, and deportation. That’s exactly what other non-third world nations do.

  4. Maybe we should ask our past prosecutor-Mr. Leahy what the definition of illegal is for it’s apparent that our representatives in Washington surely don’t know or is it just what they see as being illegal.
Against the law is against the law. Send them back and let them reapply legally.
It’s obvious from these statistics that they are ruining this Country at a rapid rate.

    • Mr. Leahy is only interested in one thing – beating Strom Thurmond’s record for serving in the Senate.

He’ll say and do anything necessary to accomplish that mission, including selling out the Legal Citizens of the State he’s supposed to represent.

  5. Well, keep up the ” Great Work “…….. maybe they’ll take the hint !!

Illegals kind of says it all.
