1 in 5 mail-in ballots found to be fraudulent in NJ City Council election

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal filed voter fraud charges Thursday against two Paterson city officials who allegedly engaged in a mail-in ballot scheme in connection to a special election in May.

Grewal levelled the charges against Paterson City Councilman Michael Jackson, Councilman-Elect Alex Mendez, and two other men after the Postal Inspection Service warned Grewal’s office that hundreds of mail-in ballots were found in a Paterson mailbox, InsiderNJ reported Thursday.

The attorney general’s Office of Public Integrity & Accountability (OPIA) began a probe after the Postal Inspection Service issued the warning. Paterson authorities decided to conduct the May 12 special election through mail-in ballots due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reportedly killed more than 124,000 people in the U.S.

Only 13,557 of the 16,747 vote-by-mail ballots in Paterson were counted, a local NBC affiliate in New York reported in May. More than 800 ballots in Paterson were invalidated for appearing in mailboxes tethered together. One mailbox reportedly had hundreds of ballots tied together.

The board of elections disqualified another 2,300 ballots after concluding that the signatures did not match voting records.

One Paterson woman named Romana Javier, after NBC showed her a list of people who allegedly voted on her block, told the channel that she never received a ballot and did not vote. “We did not receive vote-by-mail ballots and thus we did not vote,” she said. “This is corruption. This is fraud.”

The potential for fraud as a result of state and local officials resorting to mail-in ballots has become a topic of conversation among conservatives. Twitter flagged one of President Donald Trump’s tweets for suggesting in May that California’s mail-in ballots will be “substantially fraudulent.”

“Today’s charges send a clear message: if you try to tamper with an election in New Jersey, we will find you and we will hold you accountable,” Grewal, a Democrat, said in a statement to InsiderNJ. “We will not allow a small number of criminals to undermine the public’s confidence in our democratic process.”

“The residents of New Jersey have a right to free and fair elections, and we will ensure that happens,” Thomas Eicher, director of the OPIA, said in a statement. “Our office’s criminal investigations complement a number of other safeguards that New Jersey has implemented to ensure the integrity of our elections.”

A voter in New Jersey who receives a mail-in ballot must complete the ballot and then return the ballot through the mail, or deliver it to the County Board of Elections. The state also allows the voter to give the completed ballot to a so-called bearer, who must complete a bearer certification on the ballot before returning it on behalf of the voter.

  1. The mail-in ballot process being violated in New Jersey supposedly has nothing to do with Vermont’s proposal. Well it should. Condos is so keen on stuffing the ballot box, he could care less on how it is accomplished.

  2. Come on this must be fake news, Democrats have stated that all the hype about
mail-in ballots is just that ” hype “…………………..

Honesty is the best policy, something they never do !!

The plan is to ” win ” by hook or by crook, that’s a Democrat !!

    • Not only are Mail-in ballots easily manipulated, the ‘voting machines’ Vermont uses have been proven to be easily hackable even an 11 yr. old did it at the last “Hackers Convention” in Vegas. “Accuvote” is what we use here in Brattleboro. Those have been shown to be easily manipulated. Scott will be sure to make these machines working towards his advantage. Look who owns these machines. Mick Romney is one. That says it all. By the way, both sides manipulate the machines–just depends who is in charge at the time. Good luck Vermont! #Klar2020

  3. They can’t even cheat and get it right. What would it be like with them in office? Tammany Hall? They violated the Prime Ethical Progressive Dictum: They got caught. One in five is fraudulent? Do they know that the rest aren’t, also? Like catching and killing one cockroach in your kitchen does NOT solve your roach problem.
